Chapter 6: An Unexpected Call

The phone vibrated against the laminate table at precisely 9:15 AM, rattling the ceramic coffee mug and snapping Clara out of her deep thoughts. She picked it up instantly, seeing an unknown caller ID with a downtown Chicago area code. Pressing accept, she pressed the device firmly against her ear.
"This is Marcus Vance," a deep, measured voice responded without preamble. "I received your message. You mentioned Vanguard Towers and municipal grant disbursements. Those are very specific allegations, Ms.... Clara, correct?"
"Yes, Mr. Vance," Clara replied, keeping her tone even and professional. "I was the senior administrator for the firm for four years. I have complete transaction logs, internal emails, and signed approvals demonstrating deliberate fund diversion totaling over two million dollars. My husband, Julian Vance—no relation to you, obviously—is the principal architect and managing director. He structured the scheme with his chief financial auditor."
There was a brief pause on the other end of the line, the sound of rustling paper filtering through the speaker. "That’s a serious federal offense, not just a civil matter," Marcus said, his tone shifting from casual inquiry to sharp professional interest. "People don't usually hand over evidence like that unless they have skin in the game. Why are you bringing this to me now?"
"Because last night, my husband forced me to sign a fraudulent divorce settlement under duress, stripping me of every asset I helped build while he prepares to replace me with the very auditor who helped him execute this financial fraud," Clara said, her voice remaining steady despite the rising heat in her chest. "I am not looking for petty revenge, Mr. Vance. I am looking for justice, and I want my fair share of what was stolen before he liquidates the firm’s remaining capital and flees the jurisdiction."
Marcus was silent for several seconds, weighing the risks and the validity of her claims. "Can you provide a secure digital transfer of the primary ledger files within the hour?"
"I can," Clara answered without hesitation. "Provided we meet in person to review the terms of representation and establish a secure retainer arrangement."

"Meet me at my office on LaSalle Street at noon," Marcus instructed firmly. "Bring the encrypted drive. Don't talk to anyone, don't use your personal credit cards, and don't answer calls from your husband or anyone associated with him."
"I'll be there," Clara said, disconnecting the call. She dropped a twenty-dollar bill onto the diner table, leaving the change behind, and walked out into the crisp morning air. The game had officially begun, and Julian had no idea what was waiting for him at the top.
