Chapter 9: The Master Board

Richard turned away from Julianne and walked with deliberate, heavy strides toward the elevated DJ booth at the side of the ballroom. The contracted DJ, a young man caught hopelessly in the crossfire of an elite family war, stood paralyzed behind his mixing console, his hands hovering over the turntables as if trying to avoid touching a live grenade.
“Step aside,” Richard commanded quietly. The DJ scrambled backward without a word, sliding off his stool and retreating toward the kitchen doors.
Richard stood before the complex array of digital sliders, auxiliary cables, and master output switches. He extended his right hand, holding the small black USB drive between his thumb and forefinger. The entire room held its breath. Two hundred pairs of eyes were glued to his every movement. Even the waitstaff had stopped clearing tables, frozen in place near the service stations.
Julianne remained standing alone in the center aisle. She hadn't fled. She hadn't wept. She simply watched her new husband with an unreadable expression, her dark hair still held immaculately in its updo, her white silk dress catching the amber glow of the chandeliers. She had accepted her fate, but she refused to give them the satisfaction of broken submission.
Richard slid the USB drive into the master console’s open port. A small green LED light flickered to life on the side of the casing, indicating that the device was successfully mounted to the system. On the main monitor above the mixing board, a single folder appeared, containing a handful of audio files labeled with dates and cryptic numerical codes.
Elena watched from the back of the room, her arm still draped protectively around Lily’s shoulders, a grim, triumphant smile touching the corners of her mouth. She had waited months for this exact vindication, ensuring that the truth would finally pierce the armor of her brother’s pristine professional life.

Richard’s finger hovered over the play button for the most recent file. He didn't look back at Julianne. He didn't need to. He placed his cursor over the file name, double-clicked the track, and immediately pushed the master volume slider halfway up the track.
The initial hiss of static burst from the high-end overhead speakers, echoing sharply against the mahogany walls. Then, the audio files began to load, clearing away the white noise to reveal a familiar, sharp voice speaking in a harsh, unapologetic tone that instantly identified itself across the silent, breathless room.
