Chapter 6: The Confession of a Pawn

The interrogation room at the downtown precinct smelled of stale coffee, old paper, and institutional floor wax. Under the harsh glare of an overhead metal lamp, Eleanor sat rigidly upright in her chair, refusing to touch the styrofoam cup of water pushed across the table by a junior detective. Her purple blazer remained buttoned to the top, though her hair was slightly out of place—a subtle crack in her immaculate facade.
Across the metal table sat Detective Vance and a prosecutor named Sarah Jenkins, a sharp-eyed woman known for dismantling white-collar criminals and domestic abusers alike. Sarah slid a printed transcript of Lily’s smartwatch recording across the table, followed by a copy of the emergency trust removal petition bearing Eleanor’s notarized signature.
“Mrs. Vance, let’s be entirely clear about where you stand,” Sarah Jenkins began, her voice calm, measured, and devoid of intimidation. “We have an audio recording of your husband physically assaulting a minor and coercing her to sign legal documents. We have your signature notarized on those same fraudulent documents. Under our state statutes, you are facing felony charges for accessory to child abuse, conspiracy to commit fraud, and elder coercion.”
Eleanor let out a sharp, dismissive breath, crossing her arms over her chest. “My husband is a pillar of this community. This entire spectacle is the result of a disgruntled son and a confused child manipulated by hospital staff. You have no jurisdiction over private family financial matters.”
“This isn't a family financial matter, Eleanor,” Detective Vance interjected, leaning forward into the light. “This is a criminal conspiracy. And from what we’ve gathered in the last two hours, you weren't even the architect of this specific trust grab—Arthur kept you in the dark about how aggressive he was getting because he knew even you had limits.”
Eleanor’s eyes flashed with a dangerous spark at the suggestion that she was anything less than an equal partner in the family dynasty. “Arthur does nothing without my consent. We built this family on strength and discipline.”

“Is that what you call discipline?” Sarah Jenkins asked softly, tapping the transcript of the slap and the threats. “Breaking a seven-year-old girl’s spirit so you can hoard money she doesn't even care about? She’s a child, Eleanor. Your own flesh and blood.”
For a fraction of a second, Eleanor
