Chapter 9: The Family Council in Crisis

Inside the sprawling dining room of Margaret’s estate, the atmosphere was thick with sulfur and panic. The very same walnut table where David had shouted at Clara just days ago now bore the scattered remains of legal documents, bank statements, and draft settlement letters. Margaret sat at the head of the table, her beige cardigan wrapped tightly around her shoulders as if she were freezing. Her blonde hair seemed slightly less immaculate, a few strands straying across her forehead as she glared at the papers in front of her.

Chloe sat nearby, nervously twisting a ring on her finger, her pink top looking jarringly cheerful amidst the funereal gloom. David paced back and forth across the hardwood floor, his light blue shirt stained with sweat under the arms, his breathing shallow and rapid.

"She’s bluffing," Margaret hissed, her voice vibrating with suppressed venom. "A woman like that—quiet, dependent, coming from nothing—she doesn't have the stomach for a protracted legal battle. She’s trying to scare you into a bigger settlement, David. Don't give her an inch."

"She’s not bluffing, Mother!" David finally snapped, stopping dead in his tracks to glare at the old woman. For the first time in his life, the tone he used carried an edge of genuine resentment toward her. "She had forensic accountants reviewing our commercial portfolios before she even walked out the door. She served me at the office with marshals present! Her lawyer is Marcus Vance—do you have any idea who Marcus Vance is? He doesn't settle for crumbs; he takes scalps!"

Margaret flinched, not at the curse word, but at the sudden, unprecedented defiance in her son's voice. "Watch your tone with me, David. You let this woman infiltrate our family, and now you’re blaming me because she lacks breeding and loyalty?"

"Stop it! Both of you, just stop it!" Chloe cried out, slamming her palms onto the dining table. Tears welled in her eyes, finally shattering the fragile facade of familial perfection. "This is all because Mom couldn't keep her mouth shut about Clara’s mother! You had to jab at her, Mom. You just had to prove you were dominant. And David, you let you do it because you’re too terrified to stand up to her!"

The room fell into a dead silence. Margaret stared at her daughter as if she had grown a second head, her lips parting in shock. David lowered his head, running a hand through his short dark hair, the crushing weight of reality finally settling onto his shoulders.

"She recorded it," David whispered, the confession tearing out of him like glass. "Clara had her phone recording during dinner. She has audio of you provoking her, and audio of me shouting at her to apologize. Vance attached the transcript to the initial filing. If this goes to trial, our entire financial structure goes public."

Margaret’s face paled beneath her makeup. The invincible matriarch realized, with sudden, terrifying clarity, that her reign of quiet psychological terror had finally met an immovable, modern wall.
