Chapter 6

Deputy Miller does not flinch at Arthur’s veiled threat. As a twenty-year veteran of the county sheriff’s department, he has heard every iteration of the wealthy-man’s defense, from subtle intimidation to outright bribery attempts. He simply pulls out a pair of steel handcuffs from his utility belt, the metallic clink ringing sharply against the quiet wood-paneled walls of the study.

“Mr. Vance, step away from the doorway and place your hands behind your back,” Miller instructs, his voice dropping into the flat, unyielding register of professional authority. “You are being detained on suspicion of domestic assault and grand larceny pending formal arraignment.”

Arthur’s gaze flicks from the glinting steel cuffs to Clara, who stands near the bookshelf with her arms folded neatly across her chest. For a split second, the mask slips entirely, revealing a flash of genuine, unadulterated hatred that cuts deeper than any physical violence he has inflicted upon her.

“You’ll be penniless within a week, Clara,” Arthur spits out, taking a slow step forward despite the deputy’s warning. “Without my name, without my accounts, without this estate, you are nothing. You’re the depressed daughter of a retired small-town judge who couldn't even keep her own life together before I took you in.”

Clara absorbs the words without a flinch, her expression remaining as smooth and undisturbed as the white ceramic plate that had shattered against the wall twenty minutes prior. She remembers every time he used her past vulnerabilities—her brief struggle with burnout following her mother’s passing—as a weapon to convince her that she was incompetent, fragile, and entirely dependent on his benevolence.

“I was never broken, Arthur,” Clara answers softly, stepping closer to the desk so the light catches the dried blood on her forehead and the resolute fire in her brown eyes. “I was just buried under your noise. And now, the shovel is in my hand.”

Deputy Miller steps between them, his broad frame blocking Arthur’s advance as he grabs the suspect’s arm and spins him against the mahogany bookcase. The cuffs snap shut with a sharp, definitive click. Arthur doesn't resist physically, but his eyes remain fixed on Clara with a predatory intensity as he is led out of the study and down the dim hallway toward the waiting cruiser.

Clara stands alone in the quiet study, the smell of pipe tobacco and old paper suddenly feeling clean and empty. She reaches up, her fingertips brushing the scratch on her temple, feeling the dull ache of the wound beginning to subside. The house is finally, beautifully silent.
