Chapter 11: Maya’s Testimony

The silence in the boardroom was absolute. You could hear the faint humming of the overhead ventilation system and the distant ticking of the wall clock.

Director Miller stared at Maya, his expression shifting from corporate arrogance to uncomfortable guilt. He slowly closed the manila folder on the table as if trying to hide the evidence of his complicity.

"Maya, sweetheart," Principal Higgins began, adopting a fake, oily tone of conciliation as he stood up from his chair. "Let's not make this worse than it is. Your parents have been notified. We can settle this in private—"

"Don't touch me!" Maya flinched violently away as Higgins took a step toward her. She retreated until her back pressed safely against Leo's shoulder. Leo instinctively wrapped an arm around her, glaring at the principal.

"She doesn't want your private settlements, Higgins," Arthur said firmly, stepping between the principal and the children. "She wants the truth on the record."

"The record is a closed matter," Director Miller said, attempting to regain control of the room. He stood up, adjusting his expensive silk tie. "This meeting is adjourned. Security will escort the students and Mr. Sterling off the premises immediately."

"There is no security coming, Miller," a calm, authoritative voice echoed from the doorway.

Everyone turned to look. Standing in the entrance behind Maya was a tall, middle-aged woman in a crisp, dark grey state trooper uniform, her hand resting casually on her utility belt. Behind her stood two more troopers, blocking every possible exit from the boardroom.

Director Miller’s face turned the color of ash. "Captain Reyes. What is the meaning of this intrusion?"

Captain Reyes walked slowly into the room, her heavy boots clicking rhythmically against the floor. She didn't look at the board members; instead, she walked straight up to Maya, kneeling down so she was at eye level with the young girl.

"Are you alright, Maya?" Captain Reyes asked, her voice surprisingly gentle for an officer of the law.

Maya nodded slowly, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. "I just wanted them to stop hurting people."

Captain Reyes stood up, turning her piercing gaze onto Director Miller and Principal Higgins. She reached into her breast pocket and pulled out a folded sheaf of official legal documents, unfolding them with a crisp snap.

"Director Thomas Miller, Principal Robert Higgins, and Teacher Helen Vance," Captain Reyes read aloud, her voice ringing with formal authority. "You are hereby being placed under formal investigation for institutional abuse, conspiracy, and unlawful restraint of minors."

Principal Higgins took a panicked step backward, his hip hitting the corner of the conference table. "This is an outrage! We operate under district educational exemptions!"

"Educational exemptions do not cover assault and psychological torture," Captain Reyes interrupted sharply. She nodded to the troopers behind her. "Secure the premises. Confiscate all hard drives, ledgers, and recording devices."

Before the troopers could move toward the table, Principal Higgins made a desperate lunge for the wall panel behind the whiteboard, slamming his hand onto a hidden red emergency release button.
