Chapter 11: Signing the Release

The fountain pen descended once more, and this time, Clara did not hesitate. Her signature flowed cleanly across the bottom line of the municipal claim form, sharp and legible. Evelyn followed with her executor stamp, pressing the heavy brass seal firmly onto the parchment until the red ink bled deeply into the fibers. Grandma added her mark as a secondary witness, her frail hand guided gently by Tyler's steady grip.

The documents were officially complete. The legal transformation of the old cooperative shares into active capital was sealed and ready for submission.

"We have to get this to the downtown drop-off box before ten o'clock to ensure morning processing," Evelyn said, checking her wristwatch. The panic in her voice had been replaced by a focused, efficient determination.

"I'll drive," Tyler volunteered immediately, grabbing his car keys from the side table. He looked at Clara, offering a tentative, subdued smile. "Come with me, Clara. Let's finish this together."

Clara hesitated for a brief moment, then nodded. "Fine. Let's go."

The drive downtown was quiet. The neon lights of the city flickered to life against the deepening evening sky, casting long, colorful reflections across the wet asphalt. Neither spoke as Tyler navigated the familiar streets, his hands resting firmly at ten and two on the steering wheel. The reckless abandon that had defined his recent choices seemed to have evaporated, replaced by the heavy, sobering realization of what it meant to truly grow up.

They pulled up to the municipal drop-off box outside the city hall annex. Tyler stepped out of the car, clutching the thick manila envelope containing the notarized forms, the original account papers, and Clara's signed release. He walked up to the heavy iron slot, paused for a fraction of a second, and slid the envelope inside. A dull metallic thud echoed from within, signaling that the transaction was permanently out of their hands and into the gears of the city administration.

Tyler exhaled a long, shaky breath, leaning his forehead against the cold metal of the drop box for a brief moment before turning back toward the car. When he slid back into the driver's seat, the tension in his shoulders had visibly eased.
