Chapter 12

The shattering of the sphere triggered a massive cascade failure throughout the Vanguard Tower’s basement systems. Sparks rained down like fireworks from the ceiling conduits, and the emergency klaxons wailed louder, mixing with the roar of the overhead water sprinklers soaking the room in freezing gray spray.

Mercer shoved Elena off him with a brutal shove, sending her crashing into a steel equipment rack. Elena cried out, clutching her arm as she hit the floor.

“Mom!” Julian yelled, abandoning the medical chair for a split second, but Sarah was already there, pulling Elena to her feet and firing a warning shot that grazed the heel of Mercer’s boot as he scrambled toward the open vault doors.

“Let him run! We need to get out of here before the building’s structural integrity fails!” Sarah shouted over the deafening noise of the collapsing server banks.

Julian turned back to Anna. The ten-year-old girl was shaking violently, the gray blanket she had worn on the stone steps nowhere in sight, leaving her in the simple white dress, soaked from the sprinklers. She looked up at Julian, her dark eyes wide with a mixture of fear and profound peace.

“It’s quiet,” Anna whispered, pressing her small hands against her temples. “The voices… they’re gone.”

“They’re gone for good, sweetheart,” Julian promised, scooping her up into his arms despite the throbbing pain in his own head and the blood staining his dark coat. “I’ve got you. I’m your brother. We’re going home.”

Elena limped forward, her beige coat completely soaked, her blonde hair hanging in wet strands around her face. She reached out and touched Anna’s cheek with trembling fingers, a radiant, tearful smile breaking through her exhaustion.

“My daughter,” Elena whispered, her voice choked with emotion. “My sweet girl.”

“We have three minutes before the lower levels flood completely,” Sarah announced, checking her tactical display pad as alarms flashed red. “Move, now!”

They ran through the ruined vault doors into the flooded hallway, water rushing ankle-deep across the concrete floor. As they reached the service stairwell, a tremendous groan echoed through the building’s concrete skeleton—the sound of the subterranean foundation buckling under the strain of the power surge and the rushing water.

“The exit is blocked!” Julian shouted, stopping abruptly as a massive slab of concrete and twisted rebar crashed down from the ceiling stairs, sealing their only upward route.

Sarah stared at the blockage for a split second, her mind racing. “There’s an old storm drain bypass behind the mainframe cooling room. Follow me!”

They splashed back down the flooded hallway, ducking into the smoking ruins of the cooling room. Sarah kicked open a rusted maintenance grate embedded in the back wall, revealing a dark, rushing torrent of rainwater flowing through a municipal storm pipe leading toward the river.

“In! Jump in!” Sarah ordered, holding the grate open.

Elena didn’t hesitate. She slid into the rushing water first, gasping as the cold current caught her. Julian followed immediately, holding Anna tightly against his chest, shielding her from the jagged edges of the concrete pipe. Sarah dropped in last, pulling the heavy metal grate shut behind them as the entire basement ceiling behind them finally gave way in a thunderous roar of concrete and dust.
