Chapter 2

Julian’s hand remained suspended in the air until Clara finally placed her trembling fingers in his. He pulled her upward with a firm, respectful grip, ensuring she found her balance on the slippery marble. The hotel corridor was entirely silent now, save for the muffled, exhausted sniffles of the baby in the bodyguard's arms. Eleanor took a slow step backward, her perfectly manicured hands smoothing the front of her pale pink dress as she manufactured a fragile, trembling smile. She attempted to weave her usual web of psychological manipulation, whispering that Clara had simply lost her mind, that the young maid was prone to hysterical hallucinations brought on by exhaustion and jealousy.

Julian did not look at his wife. His focus remained entirely locked on Clara, who nodded slowly in response to his unspoken demand for the unvarnished truth. The physical evidence was undeniable; Clara’s scratched cheek and torn apron were silent witnesses to the physical struggle that had preceded the hallway confrontation. Julian signaled to his head of security, a towering man named Marcus, instructing him to secure the hotel’s security footage immediately and lock down the private wing. Eleanor’s manufactured composure finally cracked at the edges; her breath hitched, and a fleeting shadow of genuine panic crossed her otherwise flawless features.

They moved into the nearest private parlor, a richly appointed room featuring deep mahogany walls, plush velvet armchairs, and a towering stone fireplace. Julian placed his son in a crib in the adjoining nursery, ensuring the baby was safe and closely guarded before returning to face the two women. The heavy oak door clicked shut, sealing them inside a stifling atmosphere of tension and unspoken accusations. Clara stood near the door, her hands folded tightly over her white apron, while Eleanor paced gracefully near the window, playing the part of the deeply misunderstood victim of a unhinged employee.

Julian did not sit. He stood beside the mahogany desk, his arms crossed over his chest, casting a long shadow across the Persian rug. He asked Clara to begin from the very beginning, cutting off Eleanor’s frantic interruptions with a single, devastatingly sharp raise of his hand. Clara spoke in a clear, measured voice, recounting the hidden moments of cruelty she had witnessed over the past six months—the sharp pinches when the cameras were offline, the harsh verbal berating whenever Julian’s back was turned, and the systematic psychological torment designed to break a defenseless child’s spirit before he could even form complete sentences.
