Chapter 4: The Handover

The heavy oak front door swung open just enough to reveal the familiar blue cap of the courier service standing patiently on the sunlit porch. Through the narrow glass sidelight, the young delivery worker offered a polite nod, holding out a sleek silver envelope alongside a small, heavy brass cylinder. It was the master lockout key—the override token that controlled the digital and physical perimeter locks of the entire estate.
Teresa, moving with frantic desperation, pushed past Clara in the hallway and lunged toward the doorway, her hands clawing at the air. But the courier, trained in high-security property handovers, smoothly stepped back and handed the override key directly to Teresa, while simultaneously handing a digital receipt pad to Clara.
Teresa clutched the heavy brass cylinder to her chest, her eyes wide with a manic sense of triumph. For a fleeting second, the color returned to her cheeks. She turned to Clara, sneering, “You think changing the locks changes anything? This house is registered under joint marital assets! We aren't going anywhere, you miserable—uonh!”
Teresa stopped mid-sentence as her smartphone buzzed violently in her palm. She looked down, her face contorting in confusion and fear. The screen displayed an automated security alert from the smart-home operating system: User Privilege Downgraded. Master Override Expired. Property Ownership Verified: Sole Deed Holder — Clara Vance.
Clara watched the realization wash over the older woman with a calm, clinical detachment. She signed the digital delivery pad, handed the stylus back to the courier, and thanked him with a warm, steady voice. As the delivery worker tipped his cap and turned away down the manicured stone pathway, Clara turned back to face the two people who had conspired to strip her of her dignity for half a decade.
“You were saying, Teresa?” Clara asked softly, leaning against the doorframe. Her arms were crossed over her white dress, her posture radiating absolute authority. “You’ve got the key. Go ahead. Try to turn it in the deadbolt. See what the house says back to you.”

David rushed to his mother’s side, grabbing her arm and pulling her toward the front door’s smart-lock panel. Teresa shoved the brass key into the mechanical backup cylinder and wrenched it hard to the left. A harsh, electronic buzzer sounded from within the wall panel. A cold, synthetic female voice echoed from the security system: Access Denied. Biometric Verification Failed. Please Vacate the Premises Immediately.
The silence that followed was heavy, absolute, and terminal.
