Chapter 4: The Voice from Across the City

The audio feed from the phone filled the room with startling clarity, cutting through the heavy tension like a scalpel. Julian’s face dropped in sudden shock and realization as he recognized the deep, measured cadence of the voice coming from the receiver. It was a voice he had not heard in three years, a voice he had assumed was permanently silenced by a combination of non-disclosure agreements, offshore payoffs, and quiet retirements.

“Julian?” the voice asked through the tinny speaker. It belonged to Arthur Vance, the senior federal prosecutor who had mysteriously resigned from his post right before Julian’s largest corporate merger went through.

Julian froze mid-reach, his hand hovering inches from Elena’s face. The color drained entirely from his cheeks, leaving his skin a sickly, pale grey under the amber glow of the chandelier. His lips parted slightly, but no words came out. The cane slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the marble floor before rolling toward Clara’s pink shoes.

“Somebody asks— Dad?” Julian finally choked out, the second part of his sentence slipping out in an involuntary, panicked reflex. The illusion of his independent empire, built on sheer intimidation and financial manipulation, collapsed in a single instant. Arthur Vance was not just a former prosecutor; he was the man who had overseen the federal investigation into the disappearance of Julian’s first business partner—an investigation that had mysteriously vanished from public records on the exact day Julian married into Elena’s family.

Clara gasped, stumbling backward until her back hit the mahogany bookshelf. The pink fabric of her dress caught on a carved wooden molding, but she barely noticed. “Arthur Vance? But he’s… he’s in Geneva. He retired years ago. Julian, what is this? What is going on?” She looked between Julian’s paralyzed expression and Elena’s calm, blood-streaked face. The pieces of the puzzle were shifting, forming a picture far more terrifying than any physical threat they could pose to Elena.

Elena remained kneeling on the floor, the blood from her cheek slowly drying in a dark trail down her jawline. She didn’t smile yet; she simply watched the panic take root behind Julian’s eyes. He had spent a decade treating people like chess pieces, believing he was the grandmaster of every board he stepped onto. He had underestimated the quiet resilience of the woman he thought he had completely broken.

“You’re on speaker, Arthur,” Elena said into the phone, her voice steady and clear. “Julian is right here. He was just about to explain where the missing forty million dollars from the foundation went.”

Arthur’s voice came back instantly, cold and sharp. “Good evening, Julian. It appears your firewall finally had a leak. The federal grand jury has just reconvened. Federal marshals are twenty minutes away from your penthouse.”
