Chapter 13: Federal Breach

Before the operative could react, the sharp crack of a stun grenade echoed across the tarmac outside, followed by the deep, amplified roar of a federal bullhorn ordering everyone to freeze and drop their weapons. The bright white floodlights of the jet were suddenly joined by the spinning red and blue strobes of half a dozen armored SUVs converging on the runway from the tree line.

Panic rippled through the doorway. The mercenary on the stairs cursed under his breath, abandoning any pretense of polite extraction. He lunged past Marcus, grabbing for Lily’s arm with a rough, glove-clad hand.

“Get away from her!” Marcus roared.

Marcus struck with the speed of a trained operative, catching the man’s wrist and twisting it upward with bone-crunching leverage. The mercenary grunted in pain, stumbling backward down the aluminum stairs and tumbling onto the wet tarmac below, where federal agents swarmed him instantly with weapons drawn.

The cabin erupted into chaos. Sarah screamed, throwing her hands over her face as she retreated toward the cockpit. Elena pulled Lily down behind the heavy leather seating area, shielding the little girl’s body with her own while whispering soothing reassurances into her hair.

Marcus stood at the open doorway, his hands raised palms out as federal agents in heavy tactical gear rushed up the airstairs, their assault rifles pointed toward the floor.

“Federal agents! Stay where you are!” the lead agent shouted, his breath pluming in the cold mountain air.

“I’m private security for the passenger,” Marcus said calmly, his voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through his veins. “The child is inside, unharmed. But she’s terrified.”

The lead agent lowered his weapon slightly, signaling his team to secure the cabin. He stepped inside, his eyes scanning the luxurious interior before landing on Elena, who was holding Lily in the footwell between the seats. Lily was shaking uncontrollably, her face buried in Elena’s beige blazer, but her right hand was still tightly locked around the brown plush bunny.

“Lily Vance?” the agent asked, his tone softening considerably as he knelt down.

Lily didn't answer immediately. She slowly lifted her head, her big expressive eyes looking up at the badge hanging from the agent’s vest. She looked back at Marcus, then down at the worn toy in her hand.

“Is my dad coming?” she whispered, her voice breaking.

The agent shared a grim, sorrowful look with Marcus. The truth could no longer be hidden behind corporate itineraries and false promises.
