Chapter 4

The ballroom doors suddenly swung open with a resounding thud, cutting off Beatrice’s triumphant decree before it could settle into the marble floor. Two men in dark, tailored suits—men who did not belong to the private security detail hired for the evening—strode into the room with an purposeful, unhurried stride. They bypassed the stunned guests, ignoring the glittering chandeliers and the champagne towers, moving directly toward the center of the floor where Beatrice, Julian, and Elena stood. The murmur of the crowd died down instantly, replaced by a suffocating, heavy silence. Even the string quartet in the gallery stopped playing, the musician's bow hovering motionless over the violin strings.

Julian’s smug expression faltered, his eyes darting from the approaching men to his mother. Beatrice clutched her beige lace gown tighter, her aristocratic composure finally beginning to crack at the edges as she recognized the federal insignia pinned discreetly to the lapel of the lead investigator. Agent Miller didn't look at the glittering crowd or the priceless art adorning the walls. He looked directly at Julian, who was still holding the ruby ring in his palm like a tainted trophy. The contrast between the festive elegance of the gala and the cold, unyielding reality of federal law enforcement was absolute and jarring.

"Julian Vance?" Agent Miller’s voice was calm, conversational, yet devoid of any warmth. "I am Special Agent Miller, Federal Bureau of Investigation. We have a warrant to seize all digital devices, financial ledgers, and communication logs associated with Vance Global Logistics and its primary beneficiaries." Julian took an involuntary step back, the ring slipping slightly in his sweaty palm. "There must be some mistake," Julian stammered, his polished corporate confidence completely evaporating. "This is a private residence, a private event. My mother is—"

"Your mother’s corporate accounts were frozen ten minutes ago," Agent Miller interrupted smoothly, pulling a thick stack of legal documents from his inside pocket. He turned his attention from Julian to Beatrice, whose face had gone chalk white beneath her expertly applied cosmetics. The beige lace gown suddenly seemed too heavy, a suffocating shroud encasing a woman whose entire life had been built on lies, bribery, and the quiet destruction of anyone who stood in her way. Elena stood quietly beside them, a silent monument to the storm she had engineered. She slipped her smartphone back into the pocket of her light blue dress, feeling the metal casing still warm against her fingertips.
