Chapter 3: Ghosts at the Window

Hours passed in a muted haze of whispered conversations and quiet clean-up operations as James and Clara tried to restore a semblance of safety to the house. The Christmas tree lights blinked rhythmically, casting long, dancing shadows across the hardwood floor where the warmth of the evening had curdled into tension. Clara walked over to the high chair, unbuckling the baby and lifting the little boy into her arms, pressing him tightly against her chest as if she could shield him from all future harm. James was busy clearing the dining table, scraping untouched food into plates while his mind raced through the logistical and emotional nightmare of what came next. Suddenly, a soft tap at the front window made them both freeze in absolute terror. Clara clutched the baby tighter, her breath catching in her throat as she stared toward the frosted glass pane. Through the transparent gap in the holiday decorations, a familiar silhouette stood in the bitter cold: Helen, still draped in her elegant dark blue velvet dress, her face illuminated by the harsh streetlamp outside. She did not knock again, nor did she shout or rattle the handle; she simply stood there, staring into her own home with an unreadable, piercing expression that defied the freezing winter wind. James walked resolutely to the front door, pulling it open an inch, letting the frigid December air rush into the warm foyer. Helen did not speak immediately; she looked past him, her eyes searching for Clara and the child with a predatory calm that sent a chill straight down James’s spine. She asked if they really thought a locked door could erase decades of obligation, her voice dangerously quiet and devoid of any emotional warmth. James told her that she was trespassing, his voice steady despite the adrenaline spiking in his veins once again. Helen offered a thin, chilling smile that did not reach her eyes before turning gracefully on her heel and stepping off the porch into the dark night.
