Chapter 13 - Fire in the Rain

The next thirty seconds unfolded in a blur of motion, noise, and blinding flashes of light. As federal agents breached the warehouse doors with riot shields and drawn weapons, Sterling made a desperate lunge for the USB drive in Julian's hand.
Marcus moved faster, tackling Sterling to the concrete floor with a savage grunt. "That's for stealing three years of my life, you son of a bitch!" Marcus roared, landing a hard right hook that sent Sterling sprawling backward into a stack of wooden crates.
"Leo! Lily!" Elena screamed, sprinting across the open floor past the shouting agents and falling to her knees to scoop both children into her arms, sobbing hysterically as she pulled them against her chest.
David stood paralyzed in the center of the chaos, watching the federal agents swarm the area, cuffing Sterling’s tactical guards and pinning Sterling himself to the floor. Through the swirling dust and flashing blue-and-red police lights, Julian walked slowly over to where David stood, his face expressionless.
"It's over, Thomas," Julian said quietly, handing his USB drive to a federal captain who jogged up to secure the evidence.
David looked down at his own hands, which were still trembling. "You let me take the fall, Julian. You let me run, you let me steal, you let me destroy an innocent family just to cover your own escape."
"I gave you a choice," Julian replied coldly. "You could have stayed and testified against Sterling three years ago. Instead, you chose to take the embezzled cash and build a lie."
"And you?" Elena’s voice cut through the shouting and sirens like a blade. She was standing a few feet away, holding Leo and Lily tightly, her eyes blazing with tears and fury. She looked at David, then at Julian, and finally at Marcus. "You’re all monsters. Every single one of you. You built your entire lives on deceit, and you didn't care who got crushed underneath."
"Elena, please," David pleaded, taking a step toward her. "Let me explain—"
"Don't," she whispered, her voice dropping to a chilling, absolute finality. "Don't ever speak to me again. Don't look at my children. It's over."
She turned away, burying her face in Leo’s soft dark hair as Detective Jenkins escorted her and the children toward the waiting ambulances parked outside in the steady rain.
David watched them go, feeling a hollow ache settle permanently in his chest. The lie was gone, and the truth had left nothing behind but ash.
Three federal agents approached David from behind, heavy steel handcuffs glinting in the flashing lights.
"Thomas Gable, you're under arrest for federal embezzlement, wire fraud, and identity theft," the lead agent said, grabbing David by both arms and spinning him around.

David didn't resist. He offered his wrists willingly, feeling the cold metal snap shut around his skin. As they led him out of the warehouse toward the waiting cruiser, he took one last look back at the dark, rain-swept river, knowing his life as he knew it had finally come to an end.
