Chapter 11: The Confrontation in the Lounge

The executive lounge on the forty-ninth floor was a masterpiece of mid-century modern design, featuring dark leather seating, polished brass accents, and an unobstructed view of the morning sunrise breaking through the clouds. At precisely 7:00 AM, Clara pushed open the glass doors and walked inside.
Beatrice Vance was already there, standing by the bar with a cup of black coffee. She wore a heavy velvet suit the color of midnight, her posture rigid and unyielding. As Clara approached, Beatrice turned slowly, her eyes flashing with a cold, calculated fury.
""You played a dangerous game, Clara,"" Beatrice said without preamble, setting her coffee cup down with a sharp clink against the glass counter. ""Pulling up old archives from the vault, digging through clauses drafted when your grandfather was running things. You think you outsmarted me.""
""I didn't outsmart anyone, Beatrice,"" Clara replied calmly, stopping a few feet away. ""I simply uncovered the truth that your family tried to bury for decades.""
Beatrice stepped closer, her voice dropping to a harsh, venomous whisper. ""That truth could destroy this company. If the public finds out about the historical structuring of our early acquisitions, stock prices will plummet forty percent by noon.""
""Then it is a good thing I have no intention of airing our dirty laundry in public,"" Clara said evenly. ""The addendum my father signed remains private—unless you force my hand during the general assembly.""
Beatrice stared at her, the older woman's facade finally cracking to reveal the raw panic underneath. ""You are holding a loaded gun to my family's legacy.""
""I am holding a mirror to it,"" Clara corrected gently. ""You had every opportunity to guide Eleanor, to teach her respect, to build something meaningful. Instead, you taught her that cruelty was a birthright. That stops today.""
Before Beatrice could respond, the private elevator chimes rang out, signaling the arrival of the board members for the general assembly. Arthur Sterling stepped out first, followed by the senior executives. He took in the tense scene between the two women, his expression grave.

""The assembly is ready, Miss Whitworth,"" Arthur announced formally.
Clara turned her back on Beatrice, smoothing the lapels of her blazer. ""Let’s go, Arthur. It’s time to shape the future.""
