Chapter 5: The Confrontation in the Stacks

Elena moved swiftly down the narrow, vaulted hallway that led to the club’s administrative archive and server room. The air here was cooler, humming with the low, steady vibration of industrial climate control units. Her high heels clicked rhythmically against the linoleum floor, each step a reminder of the narrow window of time she had left. Her phone was still locked in its endless retry loop, the encrypted files held hostage by the local network jammer.
She reached the heavy fire-rated door of the server room and pressed her palm against the electronic reader. The light flashed an angry, crimson red. Access Denied. Julian had changed the administrative credentials twenty minutes ago, locking her out of the very system she had helped design three years prior.
A sharp sound echoed behind her down the hallway—the heavy thud of rubber-soled shoes hitting the floor. Elena spun around, her heart hammering against her ribs. Two men in plain dark suits emerged from the shadow of the intersecting hallway, cutting off her only path back to the main building. They moved with professional efficiency, their arms held close to their sides, closing the distance between them with terrifying speed.
“Miss Reed, please step away from the door,” the taller guard said, his voice flat and devoid of personal animosity. He was simply executing an order, treating a family member with the same clinical detachment he would apply to a corporate intruder.
“Stay back,” Elena warned, her hand instinctively tightening around the clutch bag holding her phone. She pressed her back harder against the server room door, searching the immediate area for any tool or improvised weapon. There was nothing—only bare walls and the monotonous hum of the cooling vents.
“Mrs. Beatrice instructed us to escort you to the exit,” the second guard stated, taking another measured step forward. “And we require you to surrender all personal electronic devices for security inspection.”
“I am a founding shareholder of this corporation,” Elena retorted, her voice rising slightly despite her best efforts to remain calm. “You have no legal authority to detain me.”
“The morality clause ratified tonight supersedes shareholder rights under emergency corporate bylaws,” the guard replied calmly, reaching out a large, gloved hand toward her arm.

Instead of pulling away, Elena dropped her weight suddenly, ducking beneath the guard’s extended reach and pivoting toward the open maintenance closet beside the server room. She slammed her shoulder against the wooden door, sending it flying inward. Inside smelled of cleaning solvents and floor wax, but more importantly, it housed the manual override switch for the building’s primary electrical sub-panel.
Without hesitation, Elena reached inside the dark utility closet, her fingers searching frantically along the wall until they found the heavy metal lever of the circuit breaker. With a guttural grunt of effort, she yanked the lever down with all her weight. The entire hallway plunged into pitch darkness, the hum of the server racks dying instantly as the building’s local power grid cut out, plunging the pursuers into sudden, disorienting confusion.
