Chapter 3: The Secret Inside the Splintered Wood

Midnight settled over the empty estate, bringing a heavy, freezing rain that beat against the tall stained-glass windows of the grand hall. Clara moved through the darkness like a ghost, refusing to turn on the overhead lights. She walked straight to the spot where the wooden decorative box had been smashed earlier that evening. Kneeling on the floor, she carefully sifted through the remaining debris scattered among the shards of the silver photo frame. Her gloved fingers brushed against a hidden false bottom of the box, which had split open during the fall, revealing a compartment Julian had clearly worked hard to conceal.

Inside the hidden compartment lay a bundle of old financial ledgers and a series of land deeds bearing names Clara did not recognize, alongside a series of bank statements from offshore accounts. Clara picked up the topmost document by its edge, holding it up to the pale moonlight filtering through the arched windows. The numbers were staggering, representing millions of dollars funneled through shell corporations. More disturbing than the wealth itself was the signature at the bottom of the acquisition agreements—it belonged to Margaret’s late husband, yet the dates on the transfers were from just three months ago. Someone had forged dead hands to steal the family inheritance.

A soft click behind her made Clara freeze. She turned her head slowly to see Julian standing at the edge of the hall, half-shrouded in shadows. He wore no jacket now, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing taut muscles. He did not look angry anymore; instead, his expression was hollow, defeated by the inevitable exposure of his double life. "You shouldn't have been looking there, Clara," he said softly, his voice lacking its previous defensive bite, carrying instead a chilling tone of finality.

Clara stood up slowly, clutching the fraudulent deeds to her chest. The white wedding gown felt like a shroud now. "You lied about everything, Julian. The business, the money, even who bought this estate. You married me to secure legal access to Margaret’s trust, didn't you?" Julian stepped closer, the moonlight catching the hard angles of his face. He didn't deny it. Instead, he took a slow breath, his eyes locking onto hers with desperate intensity. "I did what I had to do to survive, Clara. But I never faked how I felt about you." Clara shook her head, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Love doesn't look like a smashed box and a terrified child, Julian."
