Chapter 10: Turning the Page

With the legal proceedings concluded and the estate successfully restructured under Marissa Bennett’s independent management, the time had come to leave the sprawling ancestral mansion that held too many ghosts and painful memories. The grand estate, with its imposing facade and echoing hallways, had always been a symbol of their father’s conditional love and Gareth’s twisted ambitions. Marissa decided to sell the property, donating a significant portion of the proceeds to children’s advocacy and forensic auditing transparency charities.
On a crisp autumn morning, packing boxes lined the grand foyer where the wedding reception had turned into a crime scene months before. Movers carried out heavy antique furniture, wrapping delicate pieces in protective blankets. Marissa stood in the center of the empty ballroom, looking up at the high ceiling where the crystal chandelier still cast sparkling patterns across the floor. The projector screen was long gone, replaced by bare white walls waiting for new paint and new stories.
Lily skipped into the room, holding her favorite stuffed rabbit, her small boots clicking cheerfully against the bare hardwood. "Mommy, are we really moving to the house by the park today?"
"We sure are, sweetie," Marissa smiled, kneeling down to adjust the collar of Lily's yellow cardigan. "We're going to have our very own yard, a big oak tree to climb, and no more big, drafty rooms. Just us."
"Can I paint my bedroom pink?" Lily asked eagerly.
"Any color you want," Marissa laughed, kissing the top of her daughter's head.
Grandmother Eleanor walked in from the patio, carrying a box of framed photographs that had survived the purge. Her gold dress was gone, replaced by comfortable walking trousers and a soft cashmere sweater—she had embraced this new chapter with surprising vigor, shedding the rigid social expectations she had maintained for decades in high society.

"The moving van is loaded, Marissa," Eleanor announced, smiling warmly at her daughter and granddaughter. "The real estate agent is meeting us at the new house with the keys whenever we're ready."
Marissa took one last look around the empty ballroom, feeling a deep, abiding peace settle into her bones. The nightmare that started with a glowing screen and a bitter accusation was officially part of the past. They were walking away with their integrity intact, their family bonds stronger than ever, and their futures entirely their own to write.
