Chapter 6 - The Washington Call

The digital ringtone cut through the suffocating tension of the dining room like a razor blade. Clara kept her eyes locked on Arthur’s pale face as she pressed the speakerphone icon on her smartphone. The screen displayed a restricted Washington D.C. area code pulsing rhythmically against the dark background.

"Answer it," Arthur commanded, his voice laced with sudden, palpable panic as he lunged forward. "Don't you dare answer that!"

Clara sidestepped him swiftly, keeping her distance near the breakfast buffet while Mark stood paralyzed in his purple polo shirt. Eleanor let out a soft cry of distress, pulling her hands away from her face to stare in horror at the glowing device.

"This is Clara Evans," she said clearly into the microphone, her voice steady despite the adrenaline hammering in her chest.

"Ms. Evans? My name is Special Agent Thomas Vance with the Federal Housing Finance Agency's special investigations unit," a deep, crisp voice echoed through the quiet room. "I’m calling in reference to a series of flagged corporate filings associated with Evans Holdings LLC and a secondary parcel of agricultural land on Route 9."

Mark staggered backward, his hip bumping heavily against the sideboard, rattling the ceramic platters. Arthur’s face drained of all color, his hands gripping the edge of the mahogany table so tightly his fingers turned white.

"I am aware of those filings, Agent Vance," Clara replied, keeping her gaze fixed squarely on her father. "In fact, I am standing in the primary residence right now with the individuals who executed those documents."

"Clara, hang up the phone!" Arthur roared, stepping around the table with his hands outstretched as if he intended to physically snatch the device from her grasp. "You are destroying everything we've built!"

"Stay back, Arthur," Clara warned, her voice hardening into steel as she took another swift step away from him. She gripped the handle of her rolling luggage bag with her free hand, anchoring herself against his advance.

"Ms. Evans, did I hear someone threatening you in the background?" Agent Vance’s voice crackled through the speaker, crisp and entirely unyielding. "Do you need me to dispatch local lawometric enforcement to your location immediately?"

Clara hesitated for a fraction of a second. She looked at Eleanor, who was now weeping openly, her short curly shaking with absolute despair. She looked at Mark, who looked like he was about to vomit onto the patterned rug.

"Not yet, Agent Vance," Clara said slowly. "I need thirty minutes to secure my personal physical files from the home office before any enforcement action is finalized."

"That is highly irregular, Ms. Evans," the federal agent warned. "Those records are subject to immediate federal seizure under the emergency asset freeze order issued thirty minutes ago."

"They won't be if I secure them myself and hand them directly to your field office downtown," Clara countered, her mind racing with calculated survival instincts. "Give me until noon. I'll meet your team at the federal building with every physical ledger, check stub, and digital backup currently inside this house."

A heavy pause hung on the line. The only sound in the dining room was the ragged breathing of her family members.

"Very well, Ms. Evans," Agent Vance finally conceded. "Noon sharp at the federal intake desk. If you aren't there, we execute the warrants immediately with local backup."

The line clicked dead. The dial tone hummed briefly before the screen went dark.

Clara lowered her phone slowly, sliding it into the pocket of her tailored black pants. The silence in the dining room was heavy, oppressive, and utterly charged with impending doom.

Arthur lowered his hands slowly from the air, his chest heaving as he stared at his daughter with a look of pure, unadulterated betrayal.

"You just signed our death warrants," Arthur whispered hoarsely.

"No, Arthur," Clara said, picking up her luggage bag and turning toward the front entryway. "I just signed yours. But before I leave for the federal building, there's one last person who needs to explain why my grandmother's signature was forged on the primary bank transfer last Tuesday."

Mark’s eyes widened in sheer terror as Clara turned her gaze directly onto him.
