Chapter 4 - The Shared Secret

Mark’s mind raced as Arthur advanced. Every instinct screamed at him to find an exit, but the heavy oak front door was bolted securely from the outside, and the tall, Victorian-style windows lining the living room were painted shut, reinforced with heavy security glass. They were trapped inside a tomb disguised as a cozy suburban home.
"You're insane," Mark spat out, stepping backward until the edge of the dining table pressed against his lower back. Lily buried her face deeper into the crook of his neck, letting out a soft, whimpering sob that tore at Mark's heart. "Helen, call the police. Now!"
Helen fumbled frantically through the pockets of her patterned dress, her fingers shaking so badly she nearly dropped her own phone. She pulled it out, tapping the screen with desperate speed. But as the display illuminated her tear-stained face, her expression collapsed into utter despair.
"No signal," Helen whispered, holding the glowing black screen up so Mark could see the empty status bar and the little roaming icon. "There's no service. Not even emergency calls. The whole house is shielded."
Arthur laughed softly, leaning against the back of a floral armchair, arms crossed lazily over his plaid shirt. "Did you really think I spent thirty years preparing this estate without factoring in modern technology, daughter? This house is a fortress. No police are coming. No help is on the way. Whatever happens within these walls stays within these walls."
"Why, Dad?" Helen screamed, her voice cracking with a mixture of grief and pure horror. "Why would you do those things? How could you look at me, at your own daughter, every single day and pretend to be a loving father while hiding bodies?"
Arthur tilted his head, his gray hair catching the afternoon light. A strange, haunting nostalgia crossed his weathered features, making him look less like a monster and more like a tragic ghost.
"You think I wanted this burden, Helen?" Arthur murmured, his voice laced with bitter self-pity. "I didn't choose the gift. The town needed balance. The woods needed sacrifices to keep the prosperity flowing. And when Lily wandered too far into the north clearing yesterday afternoon... she saw something she was never supposed to see."
Mark’s blood ran cold. "What did she see, Arthur?"

Arthur pointed a steady, unblinking finger directly at the terrified five-year-old girl in Mark’s arms. "She saw me digging where the soil was fresh. And she remembered."
