Chapter 10

Julian slammed his fist into the passenger seat of his car as he tore down the winding mountain road toward the northern ridge. The security feed on his tablet had gone black ten minutes ago, the signal dropping off the grid one camera at a time in a systematic, deliberate sequence. Arthur’s revelations about the family’s dark past echoed in his skull like a tolling bell. Clara wasn't just a ruthless gold-digger; she was a calculated sociopath executing a generational vendetta, and his son was her final target.

He pushed the sedan past its limits, tires screaming against the slick asphalt as he navigated the sharp hairpin turns of the forest road. The fog rolled in thick, swallowing his headlights and turning the dark pine trees into looming, spectral shapes.

When he finally crested the ridge, the sight awaiting him made his blood run cold.

The security gate at the entrance of the guesthouse was mangled, the heavy iron chain snapped clean by industrial cutters. Two security guards lay unconscious near the side porch, their breathing shallow and uneven from what looked like heavy sedatives administered via tactical darts.

Julian killed the engine and leaped out of the car, sprinting toward the cabin door. It hung loosely off its reinforced hinges, splintered wood scattered across the porch planks like broken bones.

"Martha! Leo!" Julian shouted, bursting through the threshold into the dark, cold interior.

The cabin was silent save for the crackling remnants of the hearth. The air smelled faintly of expensive perfume mixed with woodsmoke. Julian rushed into the living area, his eyes scanning the shadows. The portable bassinet was empty, the white flannel blanket tossed carelessly onto the braided rug.

"Clara!" Julian roared, his voice cracking with sheer terror as he tore through the small hallway toward the back bedrooms.

He found Martha tied to a wooden chair in the kitchen, a heavy gag bound tightly across her mouth, tears streaming down her bruised cheeks. Julian fell to his knees, frantically untying the knots around her wrists and ripping the fabric from her face.

"Mr. Sterling... she took him," Martha gasped, coughing violently as air rushed back into her lungs. "She took the baby... she said she was taking him back to the main house... back to the pond."

Julian didn't wait to hear another word. He bolted out the back door, sprinting toward his car through the freezing mist. The pond. The east garden pond where Eleanor Sterling had met her fatal end forty years ago. Clara wasn't just kidnapping the boy; she was staging a historical reenactment designed to frame Julian for infanticide, locking the tragic cycle of the family bloodline in stone forever.
