Chapter 5

The metallic jingle of keys at the front entrance froze Julian and Elena in their tracks. The penlight in Julian’s hand flickered, casting erratic shadows across the medical charts stacked on the reception desk. Footsteps echoed heavily on the linoleum of the waiting area—slow, deliberate strides belonging to someone with a key and a legal right to be inside the building.

"Property management," Elena whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs as she grabbed Julian’s sleeve. "Or worse, private security hired by Martha."

Julian quickly slid the forged medical ledger back into the filing cabinet, shoving the drawer shut with a muffled metallic thud. He grabbed Elena's hand, pulling her toward the darkened examination rooms at the far end of the hallway. The narrow corridor was lined with pediatric exam tables and scale units, the plastic animal covers on the medical instruments looking ghostly and distorted in the gloom.

"Through here," Julian murmured, pushing open a heavy swinging door that led into a small supply closet connected to the rear alleyway.

They slipped through just as a flashlight beam swept across the hallway entrance they had vacated seconds prior. A gruff voice called out from the front desk, "Hey! Who’s back there? Identify yourself or I'm calling the county sheriff."

Julian didn't hesitate. He heaved against the heavy metal push-bar of the back exit, and the door swung open, flooding the alley with the pale glow of streetlights. They tumbled out onto the cracked pavement just as the interior alarm system began to wail—a shrill, ear-piercing shriek that shattered the quiet of the night.

"Run!" Elena hissed, pulling Julian toward the corner where their sedan was parked in the shadows.

They scrambled into the car, slamming the doors shut as Julian turned the ignition. The engine roared to life, and he threw the car into reverse, tires squealing against the asphalt as they darted away from the alley just as a security vehicle turned the corner with its amber hazards flashing. They sped down two side streets before Julian finally cut the headlights, coasting into the dimly lit parking lot of a twenty-four-hour diner to catch their breath.

Inside the quiet sanctuary of the car, the adrenaline slowly ebbed, leaving behind a cold, stinging exhaustion. Julian looked over at Elena, who was holding the folded photocopy of the medical register she had managed to snap with her phone before fleeing the office.

"We have our proof," Elena said, her voice shaking slightly as she handed the phone to him. "Martha committed perjury on a federal custody document. That is not just a civil family court issue anymore; that is a criminal offense."

Julian stared at the illuminated screen, the harsh light reflecting in his dark eyes. "Which means Judge Sterling has to throw out her emergency petition the second we present this to the clerk at dawn. But until then, our son is still sleeping under her roof."

"Then we make sure dawn arrives a lot faster," Elena replied, leaning back against the headrest with a fierce, unwavering resolve. "Let's drive to the district magistrate's private residence. We aren't waiting for morning office hours."
