Chapter 3

By mid-afternoon, the house had grown stifling. Claire paced the length of the living room, the hardwood floors creaking beneath her worn socks. Leo was finally sleeping peacefully in his crib upstairs, leaving her alone with the suffocating quiet and the lingering ghost of Ethan's anger. She walked over to the kitchen island and picked up the brown envelope Ethan had discarded. With trembling fingers, she pulled the legal papers out once more, needing to read the words for herself to ensure it wasn't a cruel hallucination. The stationery was thick, cream-colored parchment bearing the embossed seal of Arthur Vance, Attorney at Law—her father’s lifelong counsel. Her eyes scanned the formal legal jargon until they hit the bold header: DEED OF PROPERTY - SOLE INHERITANCE: CLAIRE. It was all true. Her father, a man of few words and immovable stubbornness, had bypassed Ethan entirely. On paper, Ethan was a guest in the home they had renovated together, painting the walls and planting the garden outside. She dropped the papers back onto the counter, her hands wrapping around a cold mug of coffee she had abandoned hours ago. The betrayal Ethan felt was palpable, and while she understood his rage, his immediate resort to suspicion stung deeply. They had built a life on shared dreams, but those dreams had just collided with cold, hard legal reality. A soft knock at the front door broke her train of thought. Claire froze, her heart leaping into her throat. Was it Ethan, returning to continue the fight? Or worse, had he called the police or a lawyer to evict her on the spot? She crept cautiously toward the entryway, peering through the small peephole in the wood. Standing on the porch was not Ethan, but Sarah, their next-door neighbor, holding a covered casserole dish with a sympathetic expression. Relief washed over Claire, mixed with a sudden wave of exhaustion. She unlocked the door and pulled it open, offering a weak smile to her friend. Sarah’s eyes immediately took in Claire’s pale face and tense posture. "I heard shouting earlier," Sarah said gently, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation. "Is everything okay?" Claire looked down at the threshold, realizing that the illusion of their perfect suburban life had already leaked out into the neighborhood.
