Chapter 10: The Shockwave of Unrefuted Truth

The atmosphere inside the mahogany-paneled senate chamber shifted instantly from a controlled judicial proceeding to a stunned, chaotic vacuum. For several long seconds, nobody breathed. The projected server logs remained illuminated on the large screen, glowing with undeniable cryptographic proof of administrative tampering. Dr. Richard Vance sat rigidly in his chair, his carefully cultivated composure completely fracturing. The color had drained entirely from his face, leaving his skin a sickly, pale grey. He opened his mouth to speak, but no sound came out; the digital evidence was simply too granular, too mathematically verified to be hand-waved away with academic rhetoric.

Dr. Arthur Sterling leaned forward, his eyes darting frantically between the projected metadata and Dr. Vance’s panicked expression. He picked up a printed copy of the access logs, his hands visibly trembling slightly as he processed the implications. “Dr. Vance,” the committee chair demanded, his voice sharp and authoritative, “did you manually execute this administrative override on the student server registry last Friday afternoon?” Vance swallowed hard, his professional veneer completely dissolved. “The... the logs have been manufactured,” he stammered, his voice lacking its previous polished conviction. “This is a coordinated attempt by a disgruntled student to deflect from her own academic shortcuts.”

Professor Evelyn Vance stood up sharply from her seat among the observers, her voice cutting through the tension like a whip. “Those cryptographic timestamps are backed by university-wide blockchain verification protocols, Richard. You cannot simply dismiss verifiable code as a student fabrication when your own corporate IP address is embedded directly in the override script.” Murmurs erupted across the horseshoe table. The other committee members began flipping rapidly through their paperwork, suddenly realizing the catastrophic legal and institutional liability they were sitting on. If this scandal leaked to the federal agencies funding Vance Laboratories, the university itself would face devastating regulatory fallout.

Realizing he was completely cornered, Dr. Vance stood up abruptly, knocking his leather portfolio onto the floor with a sharp crack. He glared at Chloe with a mixture of sheer hatred and desperation before turning and practically fleeing the chamber, pushing past the heavy oak doors without uttering another word. The dramatic exit sealed his guilt more effectively than any spoken confession could have. Dr. Sterling banged his gavel once, the sharp sound echoing through the stunned room. “This session is temporarily recessed for emergency executive deliberation,” he announced breathlessly, before motioning for the committee to retreat behind closed doors.
