Chapter 4: The Expulsion

The front door stood slightly ajar, letting in the cool afternoon breeze that did little to clear the thick, heavy tension lingering inside the entryway. Liam did not give Martha a single second to recover her composure or formulate a toxic defense. With firm, unflinching resolve, he placed his large hands squarely against the shoulders of her ruined, garbage-soaked beige dress and began marching her relentlessly toward the exit. Martha stumbled backward, sputtering and clawing at the air, her usual haughty authority completely shattered as she was shoved unceremoniously out of the house she had ruled with an iron fist. The bright sunlight outside caught the wet, glistening mess of food waste dripping from her grey hair, highlighting the absolute humiliation of her departure. Clara watched from the relative safety of the kitchen threshold, her arms wrapped tightly around her waist, her breath coming in shallow, shuddering gasps. As Martha crossed the front porch, her boot heels clacked unevenly against the concrete walkway, and she finally collided with the harsh reality waiting for them all. Two uniformed police officers, drawn by an earlier anonymous emergency call regarding a domestic disturbance, stood on the front lawn with neutral, professional expressions. Martha gasped, her eyes widening as she realized she was being paraded before law enforcement in the most degrading state imaginable. She tried to steady herself, attempting to puff out her chest and regain an air of indignant superiority, but the dripping coffee grounds and vegetable peels made any attempt at dignity utterly futile. One of the officers stepped forward, raising a hand to halt her advance while casting a questioning glance back toward the open front door where Liam stood watching. Liam offered a calm, steady nod, his posture relaxed now that the immediate physical threat had been removed from the interior of the home. Clara stood a few feet behind him, her tear-stained face visible in the ambient light of the hallway, a silent testament to the abuse she had suffered inside those walls. Martha began to shriek a breathless, disjointed tirade of accusations, pointing frantic, trembling fingers back at the house, claiming she was the victim of a vicious assault by ungrateful savages. The officers exchanged a brief, knowing look, having dealt with enough volatile family disputes to read the underlying dynamics instantly. Liam slowly closed the heavy wooden front door halfway, blocking out the shrill, rising panic of Martha’s voice, though the echoes of her defeat still vibrated through the quiet corridors of the home. He turned back to face Clara, his expression softening as he walked toward his shaken wife, ready to guide her through the difficult aftermath of what had just transpired.
