Chapter 2: Unraveling the Web

The sudden silence in the living room was deafening. The blonde woman stared at Linda, her chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow breaths. The terrifying realization that she had been played like a pawn hung heavy in the air. Linda shrank back against the minimalist white wall, her fingers clutching the stiff collar of her teal dress as if it could protect her from the fallout of her own betrayal. Linda had spent months whispering poison into the blonde woman’s ear, painting Sarah as an ignorant former tenant who had long since abandoned her legal rights.
“I… I didn’t think she checked the registry,” Linda stammered, her voice lacking any of its usual practiced confidence.
Sarah did not lower her guard. She clutched the dark cleaning cloth tighter in her hand, feeling the rough texture ground her against the swirling chaos of the past year. Daniel was gone, vanished under a cloud of suspicious financial restructuring and corporate inquiries, leaving behind two women who believed they were the rightful heirs to his meticulously curated life. The blonde woman clutched her beige pussy-bow blouse, her knuckles turning white as she processed the devastating truth. She had sacrificed her dignity, her time, and her reputation to act as Daniel’s attack dog, all while believing she was defending her own future marital home.
“You lied to me,” the blonde woman whispered, turning her furious gaze back toward Linda. “You told me she was nobody. You said Daniel divorced her years ago in secret.”
“He told me he was going to!” Linda defended herself defensively, her eyes darting between the blonde woman and Sarah. “Daniel said the paperwork was just a formality. He promised we would split the assets once the liquidation went through.”
Sarah stepped between them, her presence commanding the room effortlessly. The smudge of dirt on her cheek remained a stark reminder of the manual labor she had been subjected to just moments before. She looked at the blonde woman with a surprising measure of profound pity. It was clear that Daniel had manipulated them both, playing a ruthless game of double lives, financial deception, and emotional manipulation.
“Daniel didn’t divorce me,” Sarah said clearly, her voice cutting through their petty bickering. “And he certainly didn’t buy this house for you. Every single beam, every brick, and every square foot was purchased using my inheritance before we were even married. Your name isn't on the deed, and neither is Daniel's.”
The blonde woman staggered backward, her high heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor until the back of her knees hit the velvet sofa. She collapsed onto the cushions, her aggressive posture completely evaporating into a puddle of shock and humiliation. Her beige pants rustled as she pulled her knees up, staring blankly at the floor.

Linda swallowed hard, finally stepping away from the wall. “Sarah, we need to talk. There are things Daniel did with the company accounts that affect both of us. We can’t fight each other while he’s still out there with the offshore funds.”
Sarah looked at Linda, her eyes narrowing with calculated resolve. “We aren't going to talk here. And we certainly aren't going to pretend we are partners in this mess. You brought her here to humiliate me and push me out. Now you both get to face the reality of what Daniel really is.”
