Chapter 1 - The Echo of Broken Vows

The air inside the upscale Manhattan restaurant was thick with the scent of truffle oil and quiet judgments. Valeria stood tall in her burgundy sleeveless midi dress, her long dark hair catching the amber glow of the chandelier. On her wrist, the light grey designer handbag swung gently, while her diamond bracelet caught the light, flashing a cold, brilliant reminder of a settlement just signed three days prior. Beside her, Julian shifted uncomfortably in his tailored grey suit, his blonde beard twitching with nervous tension.
Valeria locked her dark eyes onto the table where her ex-husband, Richard, sat alongside a poised woman in a beige blazer. The temptation to strike out was too great to ignore, fueled by weeks of bitter legal wrangling.
“Three days divorced and already found a rich older man?” Valeria asked, her voice dripping with calculated mockery. Her gaze flicked deliberately toward Richard’s graying temples and his expensive navy blue suit.
Julian stepped closer, his jaw tightening as he glanced around the dining room.
“You don’t have to expose yourself like this, Valeria,” Julian murmured, keeping his voice low and strained. He reached out to touch her elbow, but she pulled away with a sharp twist of her shoulder.
Across the table, the woman in the beige blazer—Elena—listened with a terrifyingly calm, composed expression. She did not flinch, nor did she raise her voice. Instead, she merely glanced up quietly at the standing couple, her green dress rustling softly against the leather booth.
Richard, the distinguished fifty-five-year-old executive in the blue suit, finally stood up abruptly. He adjusted his jacket, his luxury wristwatch gleaming as his hands moved with deliberate control. He looked sternly at Valeria, his eyes devoid of the warmth they had once shared during their early years of marriage.
“To avoid further confusion,” Richard said, his voice cutting cleanly through the ambient noise of the restaurant, “this is my daughter.”
Valeria froze, the mocking smile evaporating from her lips as the words sank into the heavy silence. Elena slowly stood up from the table, rising to her full height with a quiet, lethal grace. She looked directly at Valeria with sharp, unyielding confidence.
“Take good care of it,” Elena said softly, stepping closer. “You seem to like things other women already decided to leave behind.”
May you like
Valeria stared at Elena’s left hand, noticing for the first time the exact, identical diamond bracelet resting against her wrist.
