Chapter 9 - The Grasp Beneath the Boards

The cold, wet fingers clamped around Maya’s ankle like a steel vice. A sharp gasp tore from her throat as she lost her balance, pitching sideways onto the weathered wooden planks of the dock.

"What the—!" Victor Vance shouted, his corporate composure instantly shattering as he stumbled back, pulling a heavy black revolver from his shoulder holster with practiced speed.

Maya kicked out wildly with her free leg, her boot connecting with a solid mass beneath the gap in the wooden slats. A muffled grunt echoed from the dark water beneath the pier, and the grip on her ankle suddenly loosened. Scrambling frantically on her hands and knees, she dragged herself across the splintered wood toward the safety of the shoreline, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped animal.

"Who's down there?" Vance demanded, aiming his weapon down through a wide gap in the rotting boards where a section of the dock had rotted away.

Slowly, painfully, a figure pulled itself up from the murky water, gripping the edge of the pilings. Water streamed from a familiar gray windbreaker, and wet, dark hair clung to a pale forehead. It was the man from the back seat—the messenger who had first confronted her outside her family home that morning. But now he wasn't calm or professional; he was bleeding from a deep gash across his temple, and his eyes were wide with sheer panic.

"Vance... they found us," the man sputtered, coughing up lake water as he hauled his upper body onto the dock. "The federal agents... they tracked the signal from the warehouse. They're already on the county road."

Vance’s face drained of color. He lowered the gun slightly, his eyes darting frantically between the wounded man and the empty dirt driveway where Maya’s car was parked.

"You fool," Vance hissed, stepping forward and kicking the wet man hard in the shoulder. "You led them here?"

"I didn't have a choice!" the man yelled back, wincing in pain. "They raided the warehouse ten minutes after we left. The whole operation is compromised!"

Maya scrambled to her feet, backing away toward her car. Every instinct screamed at her to run, to get behind the wheel, to drive away from this nightmare and never look back. But as she turned toward the silver sedan, the sound of blaring sirens cut through the crisp autumn air, echoing across the still surface of the lake.

Red and blue emergency lights flashed brilliantly through the dense line of oak trees flanking the dirt driveway. Two unmarked black SUVs and a marked county sheriff cruiser tore down the overgrown path, kicking up a massive wall of dust and gravel before screeching to a halt around her car, blocking all exits.

Vance cursed loudly, slipping his weapon back into its holster and glaring at Maya with venomous hatred. "You called them," he accused, his voice venomous.

"I didn't call anyone!" Maya yelled back, holding her hands up defensively as car doors slammed shut all around the clearing.

"Freeze! FBI! Nobody move!" a chorus of amplified voices commanded from behind the flashing lights.

Armed agents in tactical vests swarmed out from the vehicles, their assault rifles raised, forming a tight perimeter around the dock and the clearing. Marcus—her father—stumbled out of the passenger seat of the lead SUV, his hands cuffed behind his back, his face pale and tear-stained. He looked across the clearing, his eyes locking directly onto Maya’s in a silent plea for forgiveness.

"Maya! Get back!" Marcus cried out, his voice cracking with utter despair.

Before Maya could take a single step toward her father, an agent grabbed her by the shoulder, pulling her firmly behind a cruiser for her own protection. As she was pushed down behind the metal hood, she watched in horror as Vance raised his hands slowly in the air—while simultaneously sliding a small, hidden microchip into the open palm of the wounded man beside him.
