Chapter 14

The imposing white columns of the municipal building looked smaller somehow, bathed in the harsh white glare of half a dozen state police floodlights. Handcuffed in the back of a secure transport van, Mayor Thomas Henderson stared out through the heavy wire mesh with a look of defeated rage, his expensive suit wrinkled and stained.
David stood on the front steps of the town hall, holding Clara’s hand as a state paramedic gently checked the raw, shaved patch of her scalp and applied a sterile bandage to her forearm.
Reporters from regional news networks crowded around the perimeter fence, cameras flashing relentlessly to capture the dismantling of the most notorious corruption ring in the state’s history. The Saint Jude Academy board members had already been arrested en masse, and federal investigators were currently seizing boxes of incriminating documents from the principal's office.
"You did good, kiddo," David whispered softly, kissing the top of Clara’s head.
"Are we safe now, Dad?" Clara asked, her voice small and hesitant, carrying the lingering ghost of the classroom trauma.
"We're safe," David replied firmly, looking out over the flashing lights toward the horizon where the first pale streaks of dawn were beginning to break through the dark valley clouds. "No one will ever hurt you like that again. I promise you."
As the morning sun finally crested the mountain peaks, casting a warm, golden light across the valley floor, the heavy iron gates of Saint Jude Academy swung shut for the very last time, locked away by federal marshals who would ensure the school never opened its doors again.

David felt a profound sense of relief wash over him, but as he signed the final witness deposition forms for the state police captain, a cold, nagging realization crept into the back of his mind.
Mayor Henderson was just a small-time tyrant. The documents seized from the town hall contained wire transfers routed directly to accounts belonging to someone much higher up in the state government—someone whose name hadn't been mentioned once during the entire investigation.
