Chapter 11

The progress bar on the safe's LCD screen blinked stubbornly at ninety-nine percent, the final sliver of data hanging in digital limbo as the heavy footsteps outside stopped directly in front of the office door. Clara reached out, her fingers trembling slightly, and gripped the casing of the USB drive just as the brass handle began to turn. With a sharp, decisive yank, she ripped the drive from the port, cutting the connection a split second before the door swung wide open.

Superintendent Pendelton stepped into the room, his long trench coat billowing slightly around his ankles. He froze, his eyes locking instantly onto Clara standing beside the open wall safe. For a moment, neither of them moved. The air in the office grew thick with a sudden, suffocating tension that eclipsed anything Clara had felt in the hallway earlier that day.

"Clara," Pendelton said, his voice dangerously quiet, completely devoid of surprise, as if he had been expecting this confrontation all along. He slowly slid his right hand into his coat pocket. "It seems curiosity really does run in the family. Your brother made the exact same mistake, and look where it got him—erased from the records, forgotten by the district."

"He wasn't forgotten," Clara said, her voice steady and clear as she gripped the small thumb drive tightly in her fist. "And neither are the millions of dollars you embezzled from the student infrastructure fund. The files are already copying to a secure cloud server outside the district network. The moment you touch me, the entire state inspector committee receives the complete archive."

Pendelton’s eyes narrowed into hard slits, his composure cracking for a fraction of a second as the implications of her words hit home. He took a slow step forward, but before he could close the distance, the heavy frosted glass door swung open again, revealing Mr. Harrison standing in the threshold with his phone raised and recording.

"The board meeting just adjourned early, Arthur," Harrison said loudly, his voice echoing down the third-floor corridor where several faculty members were beginning to gather. "The state inspectors are already in the lobby downstairs, asking for the complete 2021 financial disclosures. Everyone in the building knows you're up here."

Pendelton glanced past Harrison into the crowded hallway, realizing in an instant that the trap had snapped shut from the outside. The institutional shield that had protected the administration for years had finally shattered. He lowered his hand from his coat pocket, his shoulders slumping in sudden, absolute defeat. He didn't say another word; he simply turned his back on them and walked slowly toward his executive desk, staring out the window at the darkening courtyard below.

Clara didn't wait. She brushed past Harrison in the doorway, slipping out into the bright hallway where the murmurs of shocked teachers and administrators filled the air. She walked with her head held high, the jagged remains of her school tie resting against her chest like a badge of survival.
