Chapter 5: Unraveling the Ledger

The heavy oak front door of the estate clicked shut behind them with a hollow, echoing finality. Julian strode directly into his private ground-floor study, leaving the door wide open. Elena followed him inside, the hem of her black dress sweeping across the Persian rug. The room smelled of old paper, leather, and expensive scotch. Without removing his tuxedo jacket, Julian walked over to his mahogany executive desk, unlocked the bottom drawer with a small brass key, and pulled out a thick ledger bound in black calfskin.

Elena stopped dead in her tracks. She recognized that book instantly. It was the private financial log of the Sterling-Vance Foundation, containing records that she had assumed were safely encrypted on a remote cloud server. Julian placed the ledger flat on the desk and flipped it open to a marked page covered in her own handwriting.

"While you were busy planning your theatrical performance at the gala, I was reviewing the quarterly grants," Julian said, his voice level and steady. "I found discrepancies dating back four years. Millions of unauthorized withdrawals, funneled into offshore accounts under shell corporations that trace directly back to your personal expenditures. High-stakes gambling debts, private properties in Zurich, and luxury acquisitions that defy all logic."

Elena stepped forward, her hands reaching out in a frantic, defensive gesture. "Julian, please. Let me explain the investments. They were high-risk, high-return strategies designed to secure the endowment against market crashes. It was for the foundation's future."

"Don't insult my intelligence," Julian interrupted, his eyes flashing with a sudden, cold intensity. "There are no investments. Only theft. You robbed the very people who trusted you to protect their philanthropic legacies. You used sick children and community outreach programs as a personal slush fund to maintain an unsustainable lifestyle of pure vanity."

Julian closed the ledger with a heavy thud that rattled the brass desk lamp. He looked up at her, his expression hardening into absolute resolve. "I contacted our legal counsel thirty minutes ago from the car. By eight o'clock tomorrow morning, forensic accountants will take full control of our assets. I am resigning as chairman of the board, and I am turning these financial records over to the federal authorities."

Elena stumbled backward, her hip striking the edge of a mahogany bookshelf. The shock of his betrayal collided with the reality of her own crimes, leaving her completely breathless. "You're turning me in? To the federal authorities? Julian, we are husband and wife. We share a name, a history, a reputation!"

"We share nothing anymore," Julian said quietly, walking past her toward the hallway without looking back. "You made your choice under those chandeliers tonight, Elena. Now you will live with the consequences."
