Chapter 8 - The Ledger In The Dust

The deafening rattle of automatic gunfire tore through the quiet badlands, chewing the rusted corrugated iron of the old mill into jagged ribbons of shrapnel. Dust and pulverized concrete exploded into the air, creating a blinding grey fog that swallowed the fading sunset whole.
“Leo, no!” Jax roared, abandoning all cover as he lunged desperately toward the sound of the young boy’s voice.
The scarred thug cursed loudly, sweeping his rifle barrel toward the old flatbed truck where a small figure had just darted behind a rotting wooden wheel.
“Flush him out!” Marcus Vance screamed from behind the safety of the SUV, his calm facade completely shattered by panic. “Burn the whole damn yard down if you have to! I want that ledger!”
Before the thugs could unleash a second volley, Jax closed the distance with terrifying velocity. He tackled the scarred man from the blind side, slamming him hard into the side of the rusted dump truck. The man’s rifle discharged harmlessly into the dirt as Jax wrenched the weapon from his hands and sent it clattering across the gravel. With a brutal, bone-crushing right hook, Jax knocked the thug out cold, leaving him crumpled unconscious in the dust.
The remaining three gunmen immediately pivoted, turning their weapons toward Jax. But before they could squeeze their triggers, a series of heavy, deafening explosions echoed from inside the mill’s dilapidated utility shed.
Old propane tanks, heated by the brushfires ignited stray gunfire, ruptured in rapid succession, sending pillars of fire and dense black smoke billowing into the evening sky. Panic rippled through the mercenaries as debris rained down around them.
Amidst the chaos, a small pair of scuffed sneakers dashed across the open dirt yard. Leo sprinted with every ounce of energy in his little body, clutching a heavy, weathered leather school backpack tightly against his chest like a shield.
“Jax! Catch!” Leo screamed at the top of his lungs, throwing the heavy backpack through the swirling smoke.
Jax caught it mid-air with one massive hand, the sheer weight of the documents inside confirming every word his dead friend Bobby had written.
Marcus Vance pushed past his panicked guards, his face twisted into an expression of murderous rage as he drew a sleek silver revolver from his suit jacket.
“Give me that bag, you little rat!” Marcus shrieked, raising the pistol directly toward eight-year-old Leo, who had tripped and fallen hard onto the sharp gravel just ten feet away.
Jax didn’t hesitate. He threw himself across the intervening space, using his own massive body as a shield the exact fraction of a second Marcus pulled the trigger.
A sharp, agonizing crack echoed across the badlands. Jax gasped sharply as a white-hot pain tore through his left shoulder, sending him crashing heavily into the dust right beside the trembling boy.

“Jax!” Leo sobbed, grabbing the biker’s blood-soaked leather vest as the remaining mercenaries closed in around them with raised weapons, cutting off all routes of escape.
