Chapter 5: The Weight of an Engine

Morning broke over the Wyoming plains in shades of pale rose and bleached bone.

Jax sat on the wooden bench outside Room 6, his elbows on his knees, a cold mug of coffee cradled between his palms. The rally was already waking up; three miles down the bypass, the roar of straight-pipe Harleys echoed against the foothills, a sound that had been his heartbeat for thirty years.

Today, it sounded like an empty drum.

The door clicked open. Cole stepped out, holding a brown paper bag containing two day-old biscuits Martha had sent over from the diner. He sat on the far end of the bench, leaving three feet of neutral territory between them.

""She's sleeping,"" Cole said, looking at his scuffed sneakers.

""She needs the rest,"" Jax said.

They sat in silence for ten minutes, watching a hawk circle lazily on the morning thermals above the sagebrush.

""Is that your bike?"" Cole pointed toward the black Shovelhead parked beneath the cottonwood tree.

""Yeah,"" Jax said.

""It's loud.""

""It is.""

""Mom said you built it from junk.""

Jax looked at the boy, noting the slight tilt of his head. ""Found the frame in an irrigation ditch outside Casper. Took two years to find the heads. Another year to true the wheels.""

Cole chewed his biscuit slowly. ""Can you teach me how to true a wheel?""

Jax swallowed hard, a sudden tightness constricting his chest. He looked at his own calloused, oil-stained hands—hands that had thrown punches, cracked bolts, and held throttle cables, but had never buttoned a child’s coat or helped with a second-grade math problem.

""It takes patience, kid,"" Jax muttered. ""A lot of patience.""

May you like

""I have patience,"" Cole said quietly. ""I waited eight years.""

The boy stood up, brushed biscuit crumbs from his corduroy jacket, and walked back inside the motel room, leaving Jax alone with the hum of the highway and the crushing gravity of a debt that could never be repaid with words.
