Chapter 12: Margaret’s Last Move

While the foundation office hummed with the quiet industry of healing and restitution, across the city in a high-security private clinic overlooking the bay, Margaret Sterling sat in a sterile leather armchair, staring blankly at the morning papers spread across her lap. The bold headlines detailing her ouster and the multi-million-dollar restitution fund felt like a physical assault. To Margaret, the exposure of the family archive wasn’t just a legal defeat; it was a betrayal of dynastic survival.

The heavy door of her private suite swung open quietly, and a man in a sharp charcoal suit stepped inside. It was Victor Vance—no relation to Robert, but rather a ruthless corporate raider who had spent years trying to acquire the remaining shipping docks that Julian was currently redistributing to the public trust. Victor had been Margaret’s shadow adversary for a decade, waiting for a moment of weakness to strike.

“They’re giving away the kingdom, Margaret,” Victor said smoothly, walking over to the window and looking out at the glittering harbor below. “Your nephew is dismantling everything you spent fifty years building, handing it over to the very people you crushed.”

Margaret looked up, her eyes narrowing as she studied the younger man with guarded suspicion. “What do you want, Victor? I am no longer chairwoman. My accounts have been frozen pending the forensic audit, and my own family has locked me out of the inner circle.”

Victor smiled, a cold, predatory expression that didn't reach his eyes. “You may not have the title anymore, Margaret, but you still have the network. You know every hidden asset, every offshore loophole, and every dirty secret buried in the Sterling archives that Julian didn’t hand over to Elena.” He pulled a sleek flash drive from his pocket and laid it on the table between them. “Help me execute a hostile acquisition of the remaining shipping terminals, and we’ll strip the foundation of its liquidity before the restitution checks can clear. We take back what’s ours, and we leave Julian and Elena with an empty shell.”

Margaret stared at the drive. Her pride, bruised and battered by her public humiliation in the ballroom and her forced resignation, flared up like a dying ember catching a fresh gust of wind. The thought of losing her legacy to Elena Vance was intolerable.
