Chapter 1: The Cold Spray

The biting rain mixed with the freezing stream of the garden hose, soaking Helen’s pink bathrobe and plastering her thin white hair against her skull. She sat motionless in her wheelchair, her frail body shivering not just from the weather, but from the humiliation. Standing a few feet away, Clara laughed, a sharp, cruel sound that cut through the downpour. Clara’s mid-thirties frame was clad in a sheer black lace robe draped carelessly over expensive silk lingerie. Her brown hair, tied back tightly, dripped with rain as she deliberately manipulated the brass nozzle, directing the high-pressure water squarely into Helen’s face.
"Stop it, Clara! Have you lost your mind?" Clara’s husband, Marcus, yelled from the porch steps, his dark hooded raincoat clinging to his broad shoulders. Water streamed from his wet, slicked-back hair, framing a face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. His hand clenched into a white-knuckled fist inside his deep pocket, the fabric straining against his tightening tendons.
Clara didn't flinch. She kept the freezing water jet trained on the old woman for one more agonizing second before casually sweeping the spray aside. She turned her head slightly, her smile fading into a mocking sneer as she looked back at her husband.
"Even if your son comes back, it’s too late," Clara shouted over the roar of the rain, her voice dripping with venom and finality.
Marcus stepped forward into the muddy yard, ignoring the cold. His eyes locked onto hers with a terrifying, hollow intensity. "I’m glad you didn’t stop," he whispered, the words carrying an ominous weight that made Clara’s breath catch in her throat.

Clara froze, the garden hose slipping slightly in her grip. She turned around to face him fully, her expression shifting instantly from smug triumph into wide-eyed, paralyzing terror as she stared into the dead calm of his gaze.
Before Clara could step back, Marcus reached into his raincoat and pulled out a heavy legal document, soaked and ruined by the rain.
