The Rain on the Porch / Chapter 2 / 15

The Red Taillights

Daniel Vance was forty-six, with sharp grey eyes, a neatly trimmed beard streaked with silver, and a reputation throughout the Pennsylvania Bar Association as a brilliant, relentless trial attorney who had left the high-society corporate sector five years earlier to run an independent civil rights defense practice.

He looked down at the tiny face nested inside Clara’s damp sweater.

"He looks like he has your stubbornness, Clara," Daniel said gently, keeping the umbrella angled against the driving wind.

"Did my father call you to witness the execution?" Clara asked, her voice steady despite the shivering in her legs.

"Your father doesn't know I’m here," Daniel replied, opening the rear door fully. "Your mother called my office from a payphone near the Bryn Mawr train station two hours ago. She told me Edward was locking the gates at midnight. Get in the car, Clara. The heater is running."

Clara hesitated for half a second, her protective instincts screaming at any sign of authority. But she looked down at Thomas, whose little lips were beginning to turn pale from the cold.

She stepped into the leather interior of the SUV.

The vehicle was warm, smelling of cedarwood, roasted coffee, and legal briefs. In the back seat was a brand-new, rear-facing infant safety seat already professionally installed, a clean thermal wool blanket, and a thermos of hot broth.

Daniel climbed into the front passenger seat, instructing the driver: "Take Route 30 West. Lancaster."

As the vehicle accelerated down the long gravel drive, Clara turned her head to look out the rear window.

The three-story Georgian manor of the Sterling estate stood bathed in exterior floodlights, pristine, symmetrical, and completely devoid of life. In the second-floor library window, a silhouette parted the lace curtains for three seconds before dropping back into the dark.

Clara didn't look back again.

"Why are you helping me, Daniel?" Clara asked from the back seat, unswaddling Thomas to check his skin against her own body heat. "You haven't spoken to my father since you left the partnership in 2021."

Daniel turned in his seat, looking at her with quiet, unvarnished honesty.

"I left the firm because I discovered what your father was doing with the probate court's discretionary adoption list," Daniel said. "I didn't have the proof then to bring down his network without having my own license revoked. When Eleanor told me what he demanded you do with this boy... I realized Edward hadn't just corrupted the law; he had corrupted his own bloodline."

"I won't be a charity case, Daniel," Clara said fiercely. "I have two years of pre-law completed at Penn. I can type ninety words a minute. I can file, I can research, I can scrub floors. If you give us a roof, I will earn every square foot of it."

A faint, respectful smile touched Daniel's face. "I wouldn't expect anything less from a Sterling who actually possesses a spine. Drink the broth, Clara. Tomorrow morning, your education begins."
