Chapter 2 - The Echo of Broken Glass

Clara’s chest heaved beneath the heavy silk of her gold-beige evening gown, the expensive fabric whispering against the dark wood floorboards as she stepped forward. Her dark hair, meticulously tied back into an aristocratic chignon, remained undisturbed, a chilling contrast to the absolute chaos radiating from her posture.

"Look at him," Clara hissed, her voice dropping to a dangerous, vibrating register that cut through the cavernous silence of the Blackwood Manor hallway. She pointed the leather tip of the belt whip toward the shivering Pomeranian huddled on an antique Persian rug a few feet away. "He is trembling. A purebred champion, whimpering on the floor, all because this careless animal," she glared down at Martha, "could not even manage a simple bowl of imported water."

Martha shielded little Lily tighter against her chest, the maid's brown wool uniform straining across her shoulder blades. The little girl's face bore fresh, angry red marks across her cheek—not from the whip itself, but from the brutal force of Clara’s diamond rings when she had struck out earlier.

"Ma’am, please," Martha choked out, her voice cracking with suppressed terror and exhaustion. "The dog bolted toward the terrace door. It was storming. Lily only tried to catch him before he ran out into the freezing rain."

"Silence!" Clara snapped, lifting the heavy leather strap once more. The gold buckle caught the dim amber light of the hallway sconces, casting a cold, predatory gleam. "You are paid to watch the estate, not to offer excuses. That creature carries more value in a single paw than your entire bloodline will earn in ten lifetimes."

Julian, still frozen at the threshold of the double doors in his charcoal-grey suit, finally found his voice. His hand dropped slowly from his mouth, revealing a face drained of all color.

"Clara... stop," Julian commanded, stepping forward, his leather shoes clicking sharply on the polished oak. His eyes darted from the bleeding scratch on Lily’s face to the heavy whip hovering in mid-air. "Put the belt down. This has gone far enough. The child is bleeding."

Clara did not lower her arm. Instead, she turned her head slowly, her cold eyes locking onto her husband with a look of absolute disdain.

"You always were too soft, Julian," Clara murmured, a cruel smile touching the corners of her painted lips. "You forget whose house this is. You forget who funded your precious corporate revival." She took another menacing step toward the cowering maid. "Now, watch closely, my dear husband, and learn how we handle disobedience in this family."

With a swift, practiced motion, Clara whipped her arm backward, aiming directly for the trembling little girl beneath Martha’s protective embrace. Julian lunged forward with a strangled cry, his hands outstretched to catch the falling leather, but before his fingers could grasp the strap, a deafening crash echoed from the dark master study behind him. The heavy mahogany door, locked for twenty years, slowly creaked open on its own.
