Chapter 12

Inside the conference room, the atmosphere was thick with tension. The neutral mediator sat at the head of a polished walnut table, flanked by Marcus on one side and Sterling Holdings’ high-priced corporate defense attorney on the other. Julian sat alone across from Clara, looking like a man watching his entire life’s foundation dissolve into quicksand.
The defense attorney, a silver-haired shark named Sterling Vance—no relation to Marcus—cleared his throat, breaking the heavy silence. “Let’s dispense with the theatrics. My clients are aware of the documents concerning the Gibson Project currently sitting on the federal prosecutor’s desk. However, litigation of that scale will take years, cost millions, and drag both parties through a very public mire. My client, Julian Sterling, is prepared to offer a clean break: full release of all joint assets to Mrs. Sterling, undisputed ownership of her gallery free and clear of any encumbrances, and a substantial financial settlement, provided the federal referral is withdrawn and the divorce is finalized under a strict non-disclosure agreement.”
Marcus immediately leaned over to whisper to Clara, reviewing the terms. On paper, it was an overwhelming victory—every financial demand met, complete freedom, and the capital to rebuild her life entirely on her own terms. It was the exact exit strategy she had dreamed of when she drove away from the estate into the rainy night.
Clara listened silently, her eyes fixed on Julian. He sat motionless, staring down at his hands resting on the table, his white button-down collar looking stark against his dark suit jacket. He looked smaller, stripped of the terrifying, domineering aura he had wielded so effortlessly in the upscale kitchen. He was a man paying the ultimate price for his lifelong cowardice—sacrificing his family’s corrupt legacy to save whatever scraps of integrity he had left.
“The settlement terms regarding my gallery and the marital assets are acceptable,” Clara said clearly, her voice echoing in the quiet room.
The defense attorney smiled, thinking he had secured the victory. But Clara raised a hand, stopping him in his tracks.

“However,” she continued, her tone hardening into absolute steel, “the federal referral stays right where it is. I will not compromise with criminal fraud or cover up a systemic abuse of power. If Arthur and Eleanor built an empire on corruption, they can defend it in a court of law. My divorce from Julian is non-negotiable, and our financial separation will be absolute, but I will not be a party to silencing justice.”
Julian sharply raised his head, staring at her with wide, shocked eyes. The corporate defense attorney spluttered objections, demanding Marcus control his client, but the mediator held up a hand, recognizing the legal reality of the situation. The walls had finally closed in.
