Chapter 6: Through the Service Door

While Arthur negotiated the terms of their survival in the main ballroom, Elena and Clara were navigating the labyrinthine service corridors behind the kitchen. The air here smelled of old floor wax, cooling ovens, and damp plaster—a sharp contrast to the polished luxury of the public spaces. Elena held Clara tightly against her hip, her sequined gold dress catching on protruding doorframes and wooden crates, but she didn't slow her pace. Every instinct screamed at her to keep moving, to put as much distance between themselves and the estate as humanly possible before Vance’s men realized the full extent of Arthur’s trap.
Clara buried her face in the crook of Elena’s neck, her small hands clutching the lapel of her mother’s evening wrap. She was crying silently now, tears soaking through the fabric of Elena’s dress.
“Mommy, is Daddy going to come with us?” Clara whispered, her voice muffled and trembling.
Elena swallowed the hard lump in her throat, forcing a calm, reassuring tone into her voice that she was far from feeling.
“Yes, sweetheart,” Elena lied gently, rubbing small, rhythmic circles on Clara’s back. “Daddy just has to finish a very important piece of business in the study, and then he’s going to meet us at the car. We’re going on a little adventure to the lake house, remember? Just like we planned last summer.”
They reached the heavy metal exit door that led directly to the underground garage where Arthur had left the black sedan. Elena pushed the heavy crash bar with her shoulder, and the door swung open with a soft metallic groan, admitting a rush of cool, damp night air. The garage was dim, lit only by flickering fluorescent tubes overhead that hummed a steady, monotonous tune. Parked near the far corner was their family car, its dark silhouette casting long shadows across the concrete floor.

As they hurried toward the vehicle, the sound of heavy boots echoing from the adjoining ramp made Elena freeze in her tracks. She pulled Clara into the deep shadows behind a large industrial utility column, holding her breath and praying the shadows would conceal them. Two men in dark coats walked past the far end of the garage, talking in low, urgent voices about securing the perimeter gates and checking the service road. They were looking for exits, not realizing that Elena and Clara were already positioned right beneath their noses.
Once the men rounded the corner toward the main security office, Elena sprinted the remaining distance to the sedan. She opened the rear door, gently placing Clara inside onto the leather seat, and quickly secured the child safety locks. Sliding into the driver’s seat, Elena’s hands shook as she inserted the key into the ignition. The engine purred to life with a quiet, smooth hum that brought an immediate wave of relief.
