Chapter 2

The heavy silence of the courtyard was broken only by the steady idle of the black SUV’s engine. As Julian struggled vainly against the iron grip of the bodyguards, the rear passenger door swung open with a muffled click. Arthur Vance stepped out into the blinding sunlight. At fifty-five, with impeccably groomed grey hair, a tailored dark suit, a crisp white shirt, and a stark black tie, Arthur embodied old-school corporate royalty. His face was a mask of cold, terrifying granite. He didn't look at Julian kneeling in the dirt. His dark eyes locked entirely on Clara, who was slowly pushing herself up from the pavement, dusting off her beige blouse with deliberate slowness.

Arthur’s gaze shifted from his daughter's scratched cheek to the two men holding his ambitious nephew. The heavy tension in the air felt almost tangible, thick enough to choke on. Arthur took two slow, measured steps forward, his leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the stone. When he spoke, his voice was not raised in a furious shout, but delivered in a chilling, quiet baritone that carried easily across the courtyard.

“Which assets?” Arthur demanded, his intense, menacing gaze finally shifting down to pin Julian in place. “You touched my daughter.”

Julian swallowed hard, his face turning an unhealthy shade of pale. “Uncle Arthur, you don't understand,” Julian stammered, his earlier confidence completely evaporated under the older man's stare. “Clara was driving the company into the ground. She was going to liquidate the European subsidiaries. I had to step in to protect the family name.”

Arthur stopped walking. He stood over Julian like an executioner weighing his axe. “Protect the family name?” Arthur repeated, the words tasting like poison on his tongue. “You embezzled four million dollars from the Seattle development fund, routed it through a Cayman Islands dummy corporation, and then you laid hands on the legal heir to this company on the front steps of our headquarters. That isn't protection, Julian. That is treason.”

Clara stepped up beside her father, her posture straight despite the lingering ache in her hip. She reached into her blazer pocket and pulled out a slim manila folder, handing it silently to Arthur without breaking eye contact with her trembling cousin. Arthur didn't need to open the folder; he already knew every document inside was a nail in Julian’s professional coffin.

“Take him down to the subterranean garage,” Arthur instructed the bodyguards coldly, never blinking. “Lock him in the holding room and call federal prosecutor Miller. Tell him the Vance Corporation is ready to hand over the complete internal audit.”

As the bodyguards hoisted Julian to his feet and dragged him away toward the underground ramp, Julian’s protests dissolved into desperate, muffled pleas that echoed off the white marble columns. The courtyard grew quiet once more, bathed in the harsh, uncompromising afternoon light.
