Chapter 3

The executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of Vance Industries was bathed in the cold, blue light of pre-dawn monitors. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the city skyline stretched out like a glittering circuit board, indifferent to the human machinations playing out within its concrete canyons. Clara sat at the head of the polished walnut table, her red evening gown replaced by an impeccably tailored white Chanel pantsuit, though the diamond necklace still glittered coldly at her throat. To her right sat Marcus Thorne, his navy suit jacket draped over the back of his chair as he typed furiously on a sleek tablet.

Surrounding them were the senior vice presidents of the firm—men and women who had spent the last four hours signing emergency corporate restructuring documents. Clara had spun a masterclass of manipulation, convincing the board that Julian’s sudden appearance at the gala was the result of a psychotic break brought on by late-stage neurological deterioration.

"The emergency petition for permanent conservatorship is ready for final signature," Marcus announced, sliding a thick leather-bound folder across the polished wood toward the center of the table. "Once signed, Julian’s voting shares transfer automatically to the executive committee, with Clara acting as primary proxy. By market open, Vance Industries will be entirely under our control."

Clara picked up a heavy Montblanc fountain pen, her hand trembling only slightly with adrenaline. "He humiliated me in front of the entire city," she muttered, her eyes hard and vindictive. "He played us. He made us look like fools. But by nine o'clock this morning, he won't even have the legal right to cross the lobby."

"Desperate men do desperate things," Marcus said smoothly, offering her a reassuring smile. "Walking out of that wheelchair was a theatrical stunt. His doctors are already prepared to sign off on an immediate, involuntary psychiatric hold. By noon, he’ll be locked away in a private facility, permanently out of our way."

Just as the tip of Clara’s pen hovered inches above the signature line, the heavy sound-proofed double doors of the boardroom swung open with a slow, deliberate creak.

Clara froze. Marcus looked up, a scowl forming on his face.

Julian walked into the room. He was dressed in a charcoal three-piece Tom Ford suit, his posture immaculate, every trace of the frail invalid gone. He did not walk alone. Striding quietly behind him was Elena, now wearing a simple yet elegant navy blazer and trousers, carrying a secure leather briefcase.

"Good morning, everyone," Julian said, his voice cutting through the tense silence like a razor.

Clara dropped her pen. It rolled across the walnut table, clattering softly against the edge before falling to the carpet. "You... you aren't supposed to be here," she stammered, standing up so fast her chair screeched against the floor. "Security! How did security let him up here?"

"Security was updated on who actually signs their paychecks, Clara," Julian said smoothly as he walked toward the head of the table. He stopped just opposite her, placing both hands flat on the polished wood and leaning forward slightly. "You seem surprised. Did you truly believe a plaid blanket and a wheelchair were enough to erase twenty years of building this empire?"

Marcus pushed himself back from the table, his face flushing red with a mix of fury and sudden, creeping panic. "This is trespassing! Julian, your medical proxy has already been invoked. You have no legal standing to be in this room."

Julian didn't even glance at Marcus. Instead, he signaled to Elena. She stepped forward, popped the latches of her briefcase, and placed a series of certified documents directly over Clara’s emergency conservatorship papers.

"Let's talk about legal standing, Marcus," Julian said, his voice dangerously quiet. "Let's talk about corporate espionage, insider trading, and unauthorized liquidation of subsidiary assets."
