Chapter 10: The Fall of Clara Sterling

The neon lights of Manhattan’s Upper East Side cast an artificial pink and blue glow across the floor of Clara Sterling’s luxury apartment. The sprawling duplex, rented under one of Arthur’s corporate shell companies, suddenly felt less like a glamorous sanctuary and more like a gilded cage. Clara paced frantically across the imported Turkish rug, pressing her vintage gold-trimmed smartphone to her ear for the tenth time that hour. The automated operator’s voice droned on monotonously: Your account balance is zero dollars and zero cents. Please contact customer service.
“Damn it, pick up!” Clara screamed into the handset, throwing the phone against the plush velvet sofa in a fit of rage.
Just minutes earlier, her landlord had buzzed up from the lobby to inform her that the monthly lease payment, scheduled for automated transfer that morning, had bounced due to a permanent stop-payment order issued by Vance Global Holdings. Worse still, her credit cards had all been declined at the high-end boutique down the street when she tried to purchase a designer gown to wear to an industry gala—an event she now realized she would never be invited to attend again.
A sharp, demanding knock sounded at the heavy oak front door of the apartment. Clara froze, her heart hammering against her ribs. She rushed to the peephole and peered out into the dimly lit hallway. Standing outside were two uniformed marshals accompanied by the building’s property manager, holding a thick stack of legal documents stamped with the seal of the New York State Supreme Court.
“Open the apartment door, Ms. Sterling,” a firm voice echoed through the heavy wood. “By order of the court, this property has been placed under asset seizure and receivership. You have two hours to vacate the premises and remove your personal belongings.”
Panic seized Clara’s throat. She wrenched the door open, her silk dress rustling sharply. “This is a mistake! You can’t do this! I am a private citizen, I have nothing to do with Arthur Vance’s corporate business!”

“According to federal filings, forty-two individual wire transfers totaling over four million dollars were deposited into your personal investment accounts directly from Vance Global research funds,” the lead marshal replied coldly, thrusting the paperwork into her hands. “Every asset purchased with those funds—including this apartment’s furnishings, your vehicle, and your bank accounts—is now property of the court-appointed receiver. Gather your things now, Miss Sterling.”
Clara stepped back, the reality of her total ruin washing over her in a freezing wave. There was no Arthur to rescue her, no corporate credit card to bail her out, and no wealthy benefactor willing to touch a scandal this toxic. She was completely, utterly alone.
