Chapter 4

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat, a rare micro-expression of sheer panic flashing across his sharp features before he managed to clamp his emotional control back down. Elizabeth looked between Clara and her new husband, her delicate eyebrows drawing together in sudden confusion. Beatrice pushed her chair back slightly, her pearl necklace rattling against her white dress as she leaned forward, ready to intervene. But Clara was already moving. With deliberate, measured grace, she placed the small silver gift box squarely in the center of the white-clothed wedding table, right beside the crystal champagne flutes and the tiered silver cake knife.
“A wedding present,” Clara said, her voice carrying clearly across the suddenly silent lawn, devoid of anger, ringing with cold, absolute authority. “You insisted on contributing to the narrative, Julian. I thought it only fair to return the favor.”
Julian didn't reach for the box immediately. His hands remained at his sides, fingers twitching slightly against the fabric of his black tuxedo. The guests nearest the table held their breath, sensing the volatile undercurrent beneath the pristine surface of the high-society celebration. Elizabeth placed a gloved hand on Julian’s arm, her voice a nervous whisper. “Julian? Who is this? What is happening?”

Julian ignored his bride, his dark eyes locked onto Clara’s with a mixture of disbelief and warning. He knew the box held something far more dangerous than simple sentimentality. With stiff, reluctant fingers, Julian reached across the table and untied the modest satin ribbon. He lifted the silver lid, his movements stiff and mechanical. As the interior was revealed, his eyes widened in utter, uncontrollable shock. Inside the velvet-lined tray rested neatly stacked bundles of crisp hundred-dollar bills, alongside a heavy, official-looking legal document bearing state seals and recent timestamps.
A murmur rippled through the surrounding guests, straining to catch a glimpse of the contents. Beatrice stood up fully now, her face pale under her professional makeup. Julian stared down at the cash and the paper, his mouth opening slightly as the implications slammed into him with the force of a freight train. The money represented every penny of the hush-money check his corporate lawyers had attempted to force on Clara months ago, rejected and returned with statutory interest. The document beneath it was a legally binding paternity acknowledgment and child support mandate, signed, sealed, and filed through the proper judicial channels, ensuring that his financial and legal ties to the past could never be quietly buried again.
