Chapter 6

The autumn leaves turned brilliant shades of amber and crimson, swirling down the city sidewalks as Lily’s sixth birthday approached. In previous years, her birthdays had been meticulously choreographed social events held in the grand ballroom of the Vance estate, complete with catered food, hired performers, and dozens of children from elite families whose parents sought favor with Evelyn. They were stiff, lifeless affairs designed more for networking than for celebrating a child's joy.

This year, Clara and Julian decided on something vastly different: a small, genuine celebration right there in their modest apartment and the neighborhood park across the street. Clara spent three days baking a homemade chocolate cake, frosting it imperfectly with colorful sprinkles that Lily helped apply. They didn't have party planners or catered menus, but the kitchen was filled with the warm scent of vanilla, butter, and genuine laughter.

On the morning of her birthday, Lily walked out of her bedroom wearing her favorite outfit: the light blue dress with the pearl collar. Despite everything that had happened, or perhaps because of it, the dress remained her most prized possession. It was a symbol of her resilience, a reminder that she had stood her ground against the most formidable matriarch in the city and kept what was rightfully hers.

"Happy birthday, my big girl," Clara said, kneeling to hug her tightly and pressing a kiss to her blonde curls.

Julian presented Lily with her main gift: a large wooden art easel and a box of vibrant paints he had saved up for months to buy. When Lily saw it, her eyes widened in pure delight, and she threw her arms around her father’s neck, squealing with joy. They spent the afternoon in the crisp autumn park, painting pictures of falling leaves and feeding ducks by the pond, surrounded by new friends from the neighborhood—children whose parents cared nothing for last names or bank accounts, only for kindness and shared play.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden hue over the park benches, Clara sat beside Julian on a wooden slat, watching Lily chase a golden retriever across the grass. Julian wrapped his arm around Clara’s shoulders, pulling her close against the evening chill.

"Penny for your thoughts," Julian whispered, smiling softly.

"I was just thinking about last year," Clara admitted, resting her head against his chest. "Remember the tension in that ballroom? Evelyn standing by the doors like a queen inspecting her troops, making sure everyone bowed at the right angle. I used to think we were failing because we didn't fit into that world."

"And now?" Julian asked, looking down at her with deep affection.

"Now I realize we weren't failing," Clara said firmly. "We were just trying to survive in a cage. I wouldn't trade this park, this messy apartment, and this life for a thousand estates."

Julian kissed the top of her head. "Neither would I, my love. Neither would I."
