Chapter 12

Back in room 304 of the hospital, the television mounted on the wall was broadcasting live coverage from the federal courthouse steps. Catherine sat propped up against the pillows, her blue cardigan wrapped tightly around her shoulders, watching the screen with unwavering intensity. Thomas stood near the window, his hands shoved deep into his grey trouser pockets, his expression unreadable as he watched the anchor report on the sudden and dramatic reversal in the federal fraud probe.

“The U.S. Attorney’s office has just confirmed that the immunity agreement granted earlier today to former senior corporate counsel Arnold Vance has been abruptly revoked,” the news anchor stated, speaking rapidly over footage of federal marshals escorting a visibly shaken Arnold out of a side entrance of the courthouse. “Sources close to the investigation indicate that new evidence submitted by defense counsel links Vance directly to the primary embezzlement accounts, transforming him from a cooperating state witness into the primary target of the federal indictment.”

Catherine let out a long, slow breath, leaning her head back against the pillow as the tension finally began to drain from her bruised body. The bandage on her forehead felt heavy, but the crushing weight on her chest had lifted.

“It worked,” Thomas murmured from the window, his voice reflecting a mix of profound relief and lingering disbelief. “Julian actually pulled it off. Arnold is going down for the entire operation.”

“He earned every bit of it,” Catherine replied quietly, her eyes reflecting the flickering blue light of the television screen. “He tried to sacrifice us to save his own skin. He simply underestimated how far we were willing to go to protect ourselves.”

The door to the hospital room clicked open, and Julian walked in. He looked exhausted, his tie slightly loosened and his hair disheveled, but there was an unmistakable spark of triumph in his eyes. He closed the door behind him and walked over to the foot of the bed, leaning his hands on the rolling metal tray.

“It’s done,” Julian said softly. “Vance revoked the immunity deal ten minutes ago. Arnold is being held without bail pending arraignment on federal wire fraud and obstruction charges tomorrow morning.”

Thomas turned away from the window, walking over to join them at the bedside. A faint, rare smile touched his lips. “And us?”

“Our cooperation in uncovering Arnold’s primary embezzlement vehicle was noted for the record,” Julian said, offering a weary, measured smile. “The U.S. Attorney agreed to drop the criminal conspiracy charges against us in exchange for full restitution of the pension fund assets and our immediate resignation from the firm. We walk away with our freedom, but our careers in corporate governance are officially finished.”

Catherine looked between the two men, realizing that while they had escaped a federal prison sentence, the price of their survival was absolute ruin. Their empire was gone, their reputations lay in tatters, and the firm they had spent decades building was now history. Yet, as she looked out at the rain finally beginning to clear over the city, she knew it was the best outcome they could have ever hoped for.
