Chapter 5

The dust settled in the amber light, leaving a thin, glittering film across the expensive shoes of the trapped elites. Senator Holloway stumbled backward, tripping over the hem of a terrified socialite’s evening gown, both of them collapsing into a tangle of silk and bruised pride. No one rushed to help them. Altruism was the first casualty in a room full of dying predators.
Elena watched the spectacle with a cold, unblinking gaze. She reached into the pocket of her dark silk wrap dress and withdrew a slim, matte-black flash drive. It was small, no larger than a human thumb, yet it contained every encrypted communication, every offshore wire transfer, and every illicit quid pro quo that Julian and his cabal had used to orchestrate the attempted hostile takeover of Vance Global over the past three years.
Julian’s eyes locked onto the small device the moment it appeared. His breathing hitched, a sharp gasp cutting through the heavy air of the ballroom.
"Where did you get that?" he choked out, his hands clenching into tight, trembling fists at his sides.
"From your private study, Julian," Elena replied, her voice steady and devoid of emotion. "The safe behind the framed first-edition copy of The Great Gatsby. You really should update your security combinations. Using your mother’s birthday is sentimental, but terribly predictable."
Julian lunged forward instinctively, a desperate, blind movement born of sheer panic. He reached for the flash drive, his fingers curling into the air just inches from Elena’s hand. But he never made contact. Elena didn't even flinch; she simply sidestepped his clumsy lunge with fluid grace, letting his momentum carry him past her. Julian tripped over a jagged piece of fallen crystal, crashing hard against the polished marble floor. The breath left his lungs in a harsh, ragged wheeze.
He lay there for a moment, staring up at the vaulted ceiling through strands of disheveled hair, his black tuxedo dusted with plaster and glass. The humiliation was absolute, etched into the red scrape blossoming across his cheekbone.
Elena looked down at him, her expression a mask of restrained contempt. "You wanted to play high stakes, Julian. You wanted to strip my family of everything we built, not because you needed the money, but because you couldn't stand the idea of a dynasty you didn't control. So we gave you what you wanted. We consolidated every single one of your illegal transactions into this little piece of plastic, routed your corporate funds into global charities, and locked the doors so you could enjoy the view."
Julian pushed himself up onto his elbows, coughing weakly. The arrogant, untouchable young man who had smiled while the exit doors slammed shut was gone, replaced by a shivering shell of a man realizing he had been outplayed at his own game.
"You're going to ruin yourself, too," Julian rasped, wiping a smear of dust from his lip. "Releasing that data... it implicates Vance Global as well. You'll destroy your own legacy."
May you like
"My family's legacy was built on survival, Julian, not perfection," Elena said softly, kneeling down just enough to bring her face level with his. The proximity was suffocating. She could smell the expensive scotch on his breath, mixed with the metallic tang of fear. "We are burning the house down to clear the ash. The question is whether you intend to burn with it."
Across the room, the heavy steel exit doors suddenly emitted a loud, metallic click. The automated locks were disengaging.
