Chapter 12 - The Drainage Culvert

The roar of automatic gunfire inside the Quonset hut was muffled by the thick concrete walls, but the concussive vibrations shuddered through the earth beneath Clara’s hands and knees as she scrambled blindly through the narrow drainage culvert. The concrete tunnel was slick with moss, stagnant water, and decades of accumulated silt, smelling strongly of rust and damp earth. She kept one hand pressed against the cold wall to guide herself, the brass key Thomas had given her clutched tightly in her other fist.
Every instinct told her to turn back, to pull the old man out of the crossfire, but she knew the brutal calculus of the situation. Thomas Vance had made his choice; his life was the price of the decades of silence he had helped maintain. Her survival was the only thing standing between the truth and the corporate-military syndicate that had engineered her entire existence.
A sharp burst of gunfire echoed behind her from the mouth of the culvert, followed by the heavy, rhythmic thud of combat boots splashing through the shallow water of the tunnel entrance. They were pursuing her.
Clara increased her pace, ignoring the sharp scrape of her knees against the rough concrete and the tearing of her silk blouse on protruding rebar. The tunnel sloped downward at a steep angle, the sound of rushing river water growing louder with every meter she crawled.
Up ahead, a faint circle of gray moonlight pierced the gloom, illuminating the heavy iron grate that blocked the end of the culvert. Clara reached the barrier, panting heavily, her chest burning for oxygen. She threw herself against the rusted iron bars, inserting the brass key into the old padlock hanging from the center clasp.
Her hands were shaking uncontrollably, slick with mud and sweat. The key slid into the tumbler, but as she tried to turn it, the old iron mechanism jammed, refusing to budge inside the corroded housing.
Behind her, the beam of a tactical flashlight cut through the darkness of the tunnel, illuminating the muddy walls just ten yards away.
“Found the egress point! Target is at the southern grate!” a voice echoed sharply down the pipe.
Clara slammed her fist against the padlock in frustration, twisting the key with all her remaining strength. With a loud, metallic snap, the internal tumblers gave way, and the rusted lock dropped from the clasp, splashing into the murky water below.

She yanked the iron gate open just as a burst of suppressed gunfire pinged off the concrete inches from her head, sending a shower of sparks into the dark. Clara threw herself headfirst through the opening, plunging into the freezing, swollen current of the river below just as a wall of bullets chewed up the metal bars she had just left behind.
