Chapter 6: The Missing Evidence

Clara’s fingers clawed frantically at the space beneath the mattress, but there was only bare wood and dust. The stack of composition notebooks—six months of meticulous documentation detailing Julian’s bank account manipulations, his isolation tactics, and recorded transcripts of Martha’s verbal abuse—had vanished. Panic surged through her veins, cold and paralyzing. She stood up abruptly, knocking over a small bedside lamp that hit the carpet with a dull thud.
Footsteps echoed softly from the hallway.
“Looking for something, my dear?”
Clara spun around. Martha stood in the doorway, leaning slightly on her wooden cane, wearing a dark green cardigan over her brown shirt. Her grey hair was immaculate, tied back as tightly as ever, and her face bore a chilling, triumphant smirk. She didn't look surprised in the least; rather, she looked like a cat that had anticipated every twitch of the mouse.
“Where are they, Martha?” Clara demanded, stepping forward, her voice dropping to a dangerous register.
“Your little diaries?” Martha asked innocently, tapping her cane lightly against the floorboards. “Julian found them weeks ago. Did you really think you were clever enough to hide anything in this house from us? Julian is a consultant, Clara. He studies systems. He anticipates variables. And you were a very predictable variable.”
From the front hallway, Maya’s voice called out sharply. “Clara? Everything okay in there?”
Martha’s eyes flicked past Clara toward the doorway. “Ah, you brought a friend. How remarkably tacky. Letting outsiders into private family matters.”
Maya appeared in the doorway, her eyes narrowing as she took in Martha’s posture and Clara’s pale face. Maya didn't hesitate; she stepped directly between Clara and the older woman. “Keep your opinions to yourself, Mrs. Sterling. We’re leaving right now. And if you’ve touched Clara’s personal property, there will be legal consequences.”
Martha chuckled, a dry, grating sound. “Legal consequences? With what money, Miss... whoever you are? Julian has already filed the initial paperwork. Abandonment of the marriage, erratic behavior, violent outbursts. He even has security footage from the dining room showing Clara attacking me.”
Clara froze. “Security cameras?”

“We upgraded the home security system last year,” Martha said sweetly. “Every room is monitored. For safety, of course. Julian’s safety from a deeply unstable wife.”
Realizing they had walked directly into a well-laid trap, Maya grabbed Clara’s arm. “We’re going. Now. This house is poisoned.”
