Chapter 10: Reclaiming the Halls

The departure of Eleanor left a profound vacuum in the Vance estate, but rather than feeling empty, the sprawling colonial house suddenly felt breathable. Maya walked through the grand foyer later that afternoon, running her hand along the carved mahogany banister where she had so often been reprimanded for running or making too much noise. The staff—cooks, housekeepers, and groundskeepers who had maintained a cautious, fearful distance from the family dynamic under Eleanor’s tyrannical reign—began to move about the halls with relaxed shoulders and genuine smiles.

Mrs. Higgins, the head housekeeper who had served the estate since Maya’s mother was alive, approached her near the base of the staircase holding a silver tray with a fresh glass of lemonade. Her eyes were warm and watery with a deep, long-suppressed emotion.

"Welcome home, Miss Maya," Mrs. Higgins said softly, her voice trembling slightly as she handed over the glass. "It has been far too long since you were truly allowed to exist in this house."

Maya took the glass, offering a genuine, appreciative smile that reached her eyes. "Thank you, Mrs. Higgins. We’re going to make some changes around here. Real changes."

The housekeeper nodded vigorously, her expression firm. "We are all ready to help, my dear. Your mother would have been so proud of the young woman you've become despite everything."

Later that afternoon, Maya sat at the long oak table in her mother’s old art studio on the third floor—a room that Eleanor had kept locked and padlocked for years under the guise of historic preservation. Inside, the space was filled with natural light pouring through large skylights, revealing rows of unfinished canvases, jars of dried paintbrushes, and sketchbooks piled neatly on wooden easels. It was a creative sanctuary that had been erased from the house’s daily life, hidden away like a shameful secret.

Richard walked into the studio quietly, holding a cardboard box filled with old photographs and letters recovered from the study safe. He set the box down gently on the worktable beside Maya’s open journal.

"I spoke with the attorneys an hour ago," Richard said, pulling up a wooden stool to sit beside her. "The preliminary injunctions were upheld by the judge. Eleanor’s attempts to contest the asset freeze were rejected pending a full forensic audit of the foundation accounts."

Maya looked up from a charcoal sketch her mother had drawn of the garden outside. "Do you think she’ll fight back?"

"With everything she has," Richard admitted honestly. "Eleanor doesn't know how to lose. But for the first time, we have the truth on our side, and we have legal standing that cannot be easily dismissed."
